Kari Lake moves to clamp down on mail-in and early voting; it’s ‘election DAY’ not ‘election season’

Arizona Republican gubernatorial hopeful Kari Lake could move to make changes to how elections are conducted in the state if she wins next month, suggesting to ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl that early voting and vote-by-mail could be on borrowed time, sending a shot whistling across the bow at Democrats who disproportionately benefit from both.

During her sit-down for the second hostile interview that aired on Sunday morning in the last two weeks, the fiery Lake once again batted down efforts to smear her as an “election denier” while strongly emphasizing the need to restore voter confidence in the legitimacy of elections, a major problem since 2020.

Most importantly, Lake noted the problems caused by the additional time added to cast a vote as well as mail-in voting, a practice that was put into place in many critical battleground states by Democrats who cynically exploited COVID to benefit politically and oust former President Donald J. Trump from the White House.

“Our Constitution says Election Day. It doesn’t say election season, election month. And the longer you drag that out, the more fraught with problems there are,” Lake said.

The interview was heavily slanted against Lake as could be expected given how much Democrats and their media stooges have invested in painting Lake as an anti-democracy crazy who is joined at the hip with former President Donald J. Trump who continues to contend that there was something very fishy about 2020.

But Lake fully understands how to play their game, having extensive media experience herself as a longtime television news reporter, and like she did last week with CNN’s Dana Bash, she made short work of Karl as well during the interview, leaving him to do his damage through the editing process by calling her a liar when introducing the portion of the talk which aired on Sunday’s edition of “This Week.”

“As governor, would you seek to change the election laws?” Karl asked. “And specifically, would you look to limit early voting and mail-in voting in Arizona?”

Lake responded, “I don’t know exactly how we’ll do it, but we will secure our elections, restore faith in our elections, make sure our elections are honest and transparent.”

Karl persisted, “I assume everybody wants that. But specifically early voting and mail-in voting, which you’ve been very critical of — would you seek to limit it?”

She answered, “I think, you know, a lot of things going back to when I first started voting back in the 80s, we had Election Day. Our Constitution says Election Day. It doesn’t say election season, election month. And the longer you drag that out, the more fraught with problems there are.”

“We just saw problems this week with Katie Hobbs, my opponent. She just put out — sent out 6,000 ballots that went – the wrong type of ballots to the wrong people,” Lake pointed out of her opponent, who is the sitting Democrat Secretary of State, the proverbial fox tasked with guarding the henhouse.

After rejecting more of Karl’s “gotcha” questions, Lake said, “We want to shore up our elections so they are very honest and every voter knows that it’s an honest system. Let me just give you a couple of facts: Two thousand mail-in ballots were accepted by Maricopa County after Election Day in 2020. After Election Day.”

The two continued to joust with Karl at one point accusing her of wanting to throw out the votes of “three-quarter of a million Arizonans” from the state’s largest county which may have had a chain of custody problems.

Later, seeking to trap her on another question on whether the 2020 election was on the up and up, Karl invoked former Attorney General William Barr, the media’s go-to guy for an authority figure who rejects Trump’s assertions that the election didn’t pass the smell test.

“But just to be clear, the Republicans on the Board of Supervisors, the Republican governor, now the Republican candidate for Senate, running along with you, the Republican Attorney General under Donald Trump, Bill Barr — all said that there, that there wasn’t, you know, that the election was — was not stolen,” Karl said.

Lake shot back, “Are we going to sit and litigate this? I’m happy to do it, but —”

“No, I just — I’m just wondering why they would all lie?” Karl responded, once again defending the legitimacy of 2020 by hiding behind Barr.

Lake responded, “but you guys are obsessed. Well, we have a lot of corruption in the system, and they don’t want — I think a lot of people who were responsible for that election know that there were rules broken and laws broken, and they don’t want to admit fault, OK?”

“Even like Bill Barr?” Karl asked, elevating the deep state fixer as a paragon on election integrity.

“And that’s fine. We’re going to go forward and we’re going to make sure going forward our elections are secure,” Lake said.
