CNN host Don Lemon was summarily brushed off by the acting director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Hurricane Center on Tuesday when he tried to ridiculously link climate change to Hurricane Ian.
Lemon was interviewing Jamie Rhome on CNN’s “Don Lemon Tonight” during coverage of the monstrous Category 4 hurricane that lashed Florida, causing widespread damage, power outages, and flooding.
The downgraded CNN anchor asserted that meteorologists have claimed Hurricane Ian could enter “another period of rapid intensification” and asked the NOAA chief what effect climate change has had on the “phenomena.”
“We can come back and talk about climate change at a later time. I want to focus on the here and now. We think the rapid intensification is probably almost done. There could be a little bit more intensification as it’s still over the warm waters of the eastern Gulf of Mexico, but I don’t think we’re going to get any more rapid intensification,” Rhome said.
There is a time and a place for this discussion. The scientist knows this and stays on message. He wisely uses his time on television to try to save lives. But @donlemon doesn’t care about that. https://t.co/Au4aOx5RLz

“Listen, I’m just trying to get, you said you want to talk about climate change. But what effect does climate change have on this phenomenon that is happening now? Because it seems these storms are intensifying. That’s the question,” Lemon pressed Rhome.
“I don’t think you can link climate change to any one event. On the whole, on the cumulative, climate change may be making storms worse. But to link it to any one event, I would caution against that,” Rhome flatly stated.
Lemon then went on to state that he grew up in Florida and doubled down saying that something was making storms intensify. He then asked Rhome about the parts of Florida that would not take a “direct hit” from Ian.
I saw this and thought good for him for staying on topic and not allowing this situation to endorse the narrative of climate change. Prayers for Florida.

Lemon: “Ok, but I GREW UP around hurricanes so I think I know a little more than you, science man.”

Lemon also doesn’t care about facts. Since he “grew up there”, seems like he’d know 3 of the top 5 strongest hurricanes to hit Florida date back to the early 1900’s.https://t.co/jQ3wT3CKgO

“It’s really going to be a big event for not just Florida, but also Georgia and South Carolina,” Rhome informed him.
“Florida’s coastline has been massively developed. Is this impending storm a warning about that, given the strength of the storms that we are now seeing, as I said before, much bigger in intensity than in my 50-something years on this earth growing up on the Gulf Coast?” Lemon asked again pivoting to alleged climate change.
Ideologues gonna ideologue.

Rhome basically ignored the attempted segue and pointed out that a lot of people have recently moved to Florida who had little or no experience with hurricanes, saying, “I’m really worried about them, hoping that they’re, rather than try to tackle this one on their own, they’re heeding the advice of local officials.”
Don Lemon has been essentially demoted from the “Don Lemon Tonight” show to the network’s morning show “New Day.” Many contend it is for reasons such as his insistence on politicizing a hurricane that he was exiled, so to speak.
