Gov Newsom urges Dems to ‘wake folks up’, accuses red states of having highest crime rates

Governor Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) asserted during a disingenuous interview on MSNBC Wednesday that the majority of states where the crime is the highest are red states and claimed that Democrats need to push back against the messaging blaming the left.

While it is true that Republicans and conservatives have claimed for a long time that crime-ridden cities are primarily led by Democrats, the way that Newsom framed it was not very honest. He did not cite a source. A far more interesting statistic would be which cities in the United States have the highest crime rates, not which states do.

“We need to be more assertive to wake folks up. It is not just Mar-a-Lago. It is not just Trump and January 6. I mean, we all hope that Trump goes in the ashbin of history and we can turn the page on Trump, but then what? These guys are at another level of demonization, another level of implementing and applying that demonization through legislation. Trump has to be blushing at some of the stuff these Republicans are getting away with,” Newsom told host Alex Wagner.

Newsom then broached the talking point of autocracy on the right.

“Bill Clinton said decades ago, when we got shellacked in one of the midterms: Given the choice, the American people always support strong-and-wrong versus weak-and-right. This was true then and it is true now. That this demonization has a political benefit. It worked. It works situationally. And that is what is so sad. But now it’s weaponized on a whole other level with this feedback loop of social media. And then, of course, the propaganda networks and the anger machine, which of course, the right dominates. And we have nothing, respectfully, nothing comparable,” he falsely contended.

“My awakening in all this is it’s not just about midterms in Congress or 2024, Biden will Biden won’t, it is deeper than that. The rights revolution that we’ve taken for granted for the last 50 years is being wiped out in real-time, state after state. And they have intention. They are focused. And they will stop at nothing to achieve their goals of rolling back all of these rights. And they’re doing it successfully,” Newsom charged.

The California governor believes it comes down to messaging… pounding leftist dogma into the brains of conservatives one way or the other.

“There’s no doubt that states are on the front lines of the rights battles, period, full stop. And this Supreme Court has now made that crystal clear. We honed ourselves and focused our energies more distinctly in that respect. But we have a messaging problem — we can argue, what are we doing on immigration reform, what are we doing on a number of other issues,” he stated.

“I’m not going to deny the substantive challenges our party has as well as addressing those tough and pressing issues. It’s not just the messaging problem. But the messaging problem is one that has persisted with our party for years and years. We’re constantly on the defense. We allow these culture wars to take shape and we are consisting on the back end of them,” he charged, despite the fact that Democrats are arguably the ones who have created the culture wars to enable a political agenda.

“Eight of the top ten states with the highest murder rates, all are Republican states. How do Democrats not know that? In fact, it’s really nine out of ten. Georgia went for Biden but it is really a Republican state, at least a red state. Eight out of ten, and you’re losing that message? Crime is higher, as well as taxes, here for the average citizen in Texas. It’s higher — crime, higher than in the state of California. 67% higher gun death rate in Texas. Why don’t we push back?” Newsom said, not citing a source while perfecting his gaslighting technique.

“Why don’t we?” Wagner asked.

“I don’t know,” he replied. “I’m optimistic about our ability turns around if we go on offense. That’s why I’m doing the billboards. That’s why I’m doing that. That’s why I’m doing the TV commercials in other states. Take it to them and take it to that damn social media network, whatever that thing is called, Truth Social. Which, by the way, I can’t imagine will be around in two years.”
