FBI whistleblower pays a price for exposing unjust ‘persecution’ of conservatives: ‘I have a moral obligation’

FBI Special Agent Steve Friend filed a whistleblower complaint on Wednesday alleging the FBI cooked the books to exaggerate the threat of domestic terrorism following Jan. 6 to harass and terrorize conservative Americans.

New York Post reporter and author Miranda Devine broke the story and went on Fox News host Tucker Carlson’s show Wednesday night to reveal the punishment of Friend for revealing what he viewed as “persecution” of conservatives by the bureau.

Friend, 37, filed the grievance with the Department of Justice inspector general. He was a respected 12-year veteran of the FBI and a SWAT team member who is married and has two small children. Following the complaint, Friend was suspended Monday and stripped of his gun and badge. He was then escorted out of the FBI field office in Daytona Beach, Florida.

His top-secret security clearance was also suspended because he “entered FBI space [his office] and downloaded documents from FBI computer systems [an employee handbook and guidelines for employee disciplinary procedures] to an unauthorized removable flash drive.”

He was declared absent without leave for refusing to participate in SWAT raids that he believed violated FBI policy and were a use of excessive force against Jan. 6 participants accused of misdemeanor offenses.

“He just could not live with his conscience after he was dragged off these very important child porn, child exploitation, and human trafficking investigations he was working on, and put on the very bogus January 6 cases he has been working on… He could see from the ground how the FBI Washington DC Field Office was manipulating these cases to try and expand and pretend the problem was bigger than it was. And he also didn’t want to participate in SWAT raids on people who were being accused of misdemeanors at worst… Steve Friend stood up and said, ‘I will not do this,’” Devine stated in a New York Post op-ed.

“I have an oath to uphold the Constitution,” he told his superiors when he filed his conscientious objection to joining an Aug. 24 raid on a J6 subject in the Jacksonville, Florida area. “I have a moral objection and want to be considered a conscientious objector.”

Friend did not vote for former President Trump in the 2020 election. But he knew what was happening was constitutionally wrong and told his immediate supervisor twice that he believed the raid, and the investigative process leading up to it, violated FBI policy and the subject’s right under the Sixth Amendment to a fair trial and his Eighth Amendment right against cruel and unusual punishment.

One of Friend’s allegations bluntly claims, “The Washington, DC, field office is ‘manipulating’ FBI case management protocol and farming out J6 cases to field offices across the country to create the false impression that right-wing domestic violence is a widespread national problem that goes far beyond the ‘black swan’ event of Jan. 6, 2021.”

He is not the only one sticking his neck out. In July, FBI whistleblowers went to Congressional Republicans and told them that FBI leadership was “pressuring” agents to manipulate domestic terrorism data. According to them, the FBI is creating a narrative that helps the Biden administration while vilifying Trump supporters and branding them as terrorists.

On Monday, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) released information from a new FBI whistleblower who contends that the FBI is moving agents away from child sexual abuse investigations to focus on political investigations.

The whistleblower is asserting that the FBI is creating a false narrative by reclassifying Jan. 6 cases as separate instances of “domestic terrorism.”
