‘Fake polling’: Sean Duffy slaps down liberal co-hosts talking points when she calls him out by name

In a discussion about President Joe Biden’s Sept 1 anti-MAGA screed in Philadelphia, Jessica Tarlov, the Democrat on the panel of “The Five,” brought polling data to Friday’s broadcast. When she referred to the data, Sean Duffy interrupted with “Fake polling.”

Fox News co-host Dana Perino started the conversation by asking Tarlov what Democrats have to do to hold on to power.

“They just have to win a certain number to keep, to hold on by their fingernails,” prompted Perino.

“I think we’d like more than just our fingernails. But yeah, I mean, everyone’s just trying to win whatever coalition is going to work for them. We don’t, we’re so polarized, we’re not going to have overwhelming majorities,” Tarlov responded.

Tarlov went on to cite a Reuters poll that was taken after Biden’s speech, which found that 58 percent of respondents, including 25 percent of Republicans, are concerned by the MAGA movement’s impact on our democracy. It also revealed that 59 percent of respondents believe “Biden’s speech will further divide the country, though just about half of respondents said they didn’t watch or follow the speech at all.”

“So if you look at the numbers of Republicans that Joe Biden needs to pick off, 25% would be just fine,” reasoned Tarlov, making the wild assumption that the voters represented by that spurious data point would actually poke the chad adjacent to Biden’s name.

“People are partisans generally and even independents. When you look at it, about 40% of Americans identify as independent, but nearly 100% of them lean one way or the other. And especially with an issue like abortion on the ballot, and it will be on the ballot like in Kansas and places like Michigan now,” Tarlov continued.

“But everyone knows what it means if we get another conservative Supreme Court justice versus, you know, we can get a liberal one. People have their corners,” she added.

Referring again to the 25% of Republicans who would supposedly sell their souls and vote for Biden in 2024, Tarlov said, “You can win like that with all of your Democrats and with independents, the left-leaning ones and a lot of the right-leaning ones who do not see the world like you do, Sean.”

Hearing his name, guest host Sean Duffy could hold it in no longer.

“Fake news, fake polling,” he burst out.

“Sean, be a serious person here,” Tarlov condescended. “To say if you don’t like something it is not ‘fake news.’ Polls are real. I’ve done polling in my life,” she insisted.

Perino was also dubious, pointing to apparently conflicting data on specific races. She recalled from earlier in the week the sense that “Biden’s got some wind at his back,” but then pivoted to new polls.

“Now the polls are starting to come out post-Labor Day,” she said, “and you see somebody like Herschel Walker in Georgia now moving up, Brian Kemp moving up. And you’re seeing a little bit more of this tightening, as we all suggested, post-Labor Day.”

Jeanine Pirro agreed that races are tightening. “There’s no question about it,” she assured the panel. But then she addressed the substance of the poll.

“You know, one of the things that concerns me about this, MAGA, as some of the MAGAs, not everybody’s a bad MAGA,” she said.

Something that frustrates conservatives generally and Trump supporters specifically is the tendency of conservative media to concede points that shouldn’t be conceded. Rush Limbaugh used to beat that drum. “I reject the premise,” he used to say. He might have given co-host Judge Jeanine Pirro the business if he’d heard her statement, which seemed to concede the notion that Jan 6 was a display of the essential ugliness of the MAGA movement.
