Rove says controversy over Trump docs could cost GOP the midterms: ‘If you’re a Democrat you love it’

Political consultant Karl Rove said that former President Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents seized from his Mar-a-Lago home could spell trouble for Republicans ahead of the midterm elections in November.

Rove said rather than focusing on issues such as the border crisis, record inflation and violent crime, Republicans are having to spend too much time defending Donald Trump. It could be argued, however, that an FBI that sequestered Hunter Biden’s laptop, raided a former president’s home and also executed a pre-dawn raid on Roger Stone like he was a terrorist wanted by Interpol is kind of a big deal.

“Since the search on Aug. 8, what have we been talking about? We are now just shy of a month of talking about this issue,” Rove said. “If you’re a Democrat, you love it because Republicans are forced to talk about Trump taking classified documents to Mar-a-Lago,” the former deputy chief of staff for George W. Bush said on Fox News’s “Your World” Tuesday.

“To Republicans, it is also an advantage to not to be talking about this particular issue, and instead talking about the things people are talking about around the kitchen table. Namely, how do they keep up with the rising prices, how good is the economy going to be and what’s going to be done about the border and the crime in their neighborhoods and communities?”

Rove, who has often been accused of being a classic RINO, said that Trump’s situation is of his own making.

“Yeah, look and I understand the angst he feels, and how strongly he feels about this, but this is a situation largely of his own creation,” he said. “He should not have taken those documents.”

“But now that we’re in this kerfuffle over what they have gotten back and how they were handled, it is better for him not to be talking about it. When he went to Pennsylvania this weekend, he spent 80 minutes talking about this situation and less than half of that advancing the cause of the two candidates he was there to advance and the issues that will either determine whether they get elected or not.”

The Fox News contributor continued, “People are not going to vote Republican in order to affirm President Trump’s view of what those documents were, namely his property. They will vote Republican if they have a conviction that Republicans will do something about the inflation that is consuming our country; do something about strengthening our economy without spending a lot more money, taking it from taxpayers and turning it over to the government; and if they do something about border security and crime.”

“That is what they care about,” Rove concluded. “If we’re going to motivate them to vote Republican in the fall, then Republican candidates need to have the air space to talk about them and the former president plays a big role in giving them that aerospace.”
