Nancy Pelosi’s camp is denying now a widespread report that the speaker has been eyeing the ambassadorship to Italy if Republicans win back control of the House of Representatives in the midterm elections.

Sources told Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo on Tuesday that Pelosi wants Biden to nominate her for the position, something it looks like the president has been preparing for.
Biden has yet to fill the position and it is rumored he has kept it open for Pelosi should the need arise. A Pelosi ally who is a former Wall Street executive evidently wanted the job but it has seemingly been reserved for the Speaker of the House with the increasing likelihood that the GOP takes the majority back in a well-earned shellacking of the left.
The US has not had a Senate-confirmed ambassador to Rome since former President Trump’s envoy, Lewis Eisenberg, left the position in January 2021. Biden is likely to make the nomination for the ambassadorship by the end of this year.
Pelosi, 82, may find it harder than she thinks to secure a nomination to the post in the Senate if it’s true that she wants it. She has made many enemies on both sides of the political aisle and while some would be glad just to get rid of her, elegantly putting her out to pasture so-to-speak, others will seek to boot her out of politics entirely.
During an interview Tuesday on Fox Business Network’s “Mornings with Maria,” Senator Rick Scott (R-Fla.) was asked what Pelosi’s chances were to be confirmed as either ambassador to Italy or secretary of state, two posts she is said to be considering. He was more than a little pessimistic about Pelosi’s future if it is up to the Senate.

“I think she’d have a hard time in either position,” Scott, the current Chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, remarked.
“I think she’s been such a partisan person that I think it would be very difficult for Republican Senators to say she would do a great job at this,” he added. “You know, she’s become so partisan, year after year, it’s been worse and worse.”
“As Speaker, she’s been horrible,” Scott bluntly asserted.
Nothing is concrete yet and the post is still in the rumor stage but it would be unsurprising considering the looming elections and the political atmosphere surrounding Democrats currently.

Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill pushed back against the rumor and told the New York Post on Tuesday that the Fox Business News report was “utter nonsense.”
“The Speaker has no interest in this position and has not discussed it with anyone in the White House,” he asserted.
“This is the second time Maria Bartiromo has proceeded with reporting anonymous rumors about the Speaker’s future that have no merit,” Hammill told the Daily Mail. “And the second time she has failed to ask us for comment before airing or publishing this utter nonsense.”
Following a @FoxBusiness report @SpeakerPelosi will take the US Ambassadorship to Italy if the GOP wins in Nov., her spox @Drew_Hammill tells me: "The Speaker has no interest in this position and has not discussed it with anyone in the White House."

Earlier this summer, Pelosi and her husband were pictured lounging at a seaside resort in Italy owned by tenor Andrea Bocelli.
To date, 101 Biden ambassador nominees have been confirmed by the Senate. The president has been very slow in appointing ambassadors to some countries and that may be a political calculation.
Twenty-seven percent of the 194 ambassador positions are currently without a Senate-confirmed official. But Italy is the only G7 nation to not have a full-time United States ambassador, according to Fox Business.
The primo appointments are usually reserved for those that have helped a president the most politically and have been loyal to the cause, including political operatives, donors, and politicians who are forced out of their positions for one reason or another.
The Italian ambassador’s residence, Villa Taverna, has a pool, a three-story wine cellar, and private gardens in Rome. Pelosi, who claims to be Catholic, would also be closer to the Vatican if she took the position at this late stage in her career.
