Republicans move on plan to impeach Biden with list of ‘high crimes’

Optimistic they can regain control of Congress come the midterm elections this November, House Republicans are ramping up their machinations to impeach President Joe Biden as soon as they are able.

Some lawmakers have already introduced impeachment articles for the current 117th Congress, but they essentially mean nothing without a hold on the majority in the House, the legislative body that has sole impeachment authority. The “high crimes” named thus far range from Biden’s mismanaging of the southern border, the COVID pandemic response, and the botched and ultimately deadly surrender to the Taliban in Afghanistan.

With triumph in sight and only themselves to blame if they snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, many conservative lawmakers say they are making the ouster of Joe Biden a day-one priority.

“I have consistently said President Biden should be impeached for intentionally opening our border and making Americans less safe,” said Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.) “Congress has a duty to hold the President accountable for this and any other failures of his Constitutional responsibilities, so a new Republican majority must be prepared to aggressively conduct oversight on day one.”

So far, at least eight resolutions to impeach Biden have been offered since his inauguration in 2021. Three of them are related to his handling of the migrant surge at the southern border; three more targeting his mismanagement of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan last year; one denouncing the eviction moratorium designed to help renters during the pandemic; and still another concerning the overseas business dealings of America’s favorite model son, Hunter Biden, the Hill reported.

Firebrand Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) is the lead sponsor of four of the impeachment resolutions.

“She believes Joe Biden should have been impeached as soon as he was sworn in, so of course she wants it to happen as soon as possible,” Nick Dyer, a Greene spokesman, said Monday in an email.

While the idea may excite some Republican voters, Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is doing his typical level best to throw cold water on the notion and maintain the ineffectuality Republicans have become known for whenever they are granted power. Much like Chief Justice John Roberts, McConnell is habitually concerned more with the integrity of the people and processes of his institution than with rising to the occasion for the good of the nation.

Another example of squishiness came from Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), who last summer called Biden “unfit to serve as president” while stopping short of calling for his impeachment.

Other, perhaps alternatively easier targets for impeachment mulled over by some Republicans include Vice President Harris, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Attorney General Merrick Garland.

“Mayorkas and Garland have purposefully made our country less safe, politicized their departments, and violated the rule of law. In some instances, they have instructed their subordinates to disobey our laws. That is unacceptable,” Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), said in an email following his endorsement of a number of impeachment articles put forth this year.

“Next January I expect the House to pursue my impeachment articles against Mayorkas as well as Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene’s impeachment articles that I co-sponsored against Attorney General Merrick Garland,” Biggs added.

Eager to hold Biden’s feet to the proverbial fire, Rep. Mary Miller (R-IL), a strong Trump supporter who recently won a primary over moderate Rep. Rodney Davis (R-IL), said Biden should be removed “for purposely ignoring our immigration laws.”

“Biden and Harris have failed their most basic duty,” Miller said, “which is ensuring the safety of the American people through the security of our borders.”

Time will tell if big-talking Republicans can make good on their rhetoric or fold like lawn chairs.
