The general rule of thumb with wild animals and insects is: “They’re more afraid of you than you are of them.” But for one shockingly aggressive fox, the opposite happened to be true.
An unnamed woman in New York was caught on camera being attacked by a rabid fox in her own yard on July 25. It is believed that she is the cousin of CBS 21 News meteorologist Ed Russo, who posted a now-deleted tweet about the incident.
The woman can be seen in the footage outside of her house taking a phone call. That’s when the fox slinks around the side of the yard, running directly up to the woman and beginning its attack.

The woman is able to repeatedly kick off the fox, but it keeps coming back for more. It latches on to her leg as she spins around trying to get away.
The attack continues for some time until a neighbor with a stick enters the frame and helps to chase away the rabid animal.
“It was a beautiful animal and I didn’t want to hurt it,” the woman said of her encounter with the fox. “Unfortunately, I had no choice but to fight back, because I couldn’t get away. I thank God my neighbor showed up.”
Despite fleeing this time, the fox would go on to attack another unlucky person in the area. As a result, it was killed and taken to a laboratory at Cornell University where it was studied and confirmed to have rabies.
While the woman sustained several bites and scratches, she is reportedly otherwise okay.
