Republicans vow ‘coward’ Fauci’s resignation won’t let him off the hook: ‘We are coming for you’

Dr. Anthony S. Fauci is hoping to ride off into the sunset just before the Republican posse gallops into town, announcing on Monday that he will be leaving the federal government in December, a month before congressional committee gavels could be passed to GOP lawmakers if they regain full or partial control of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections.

In a bit of a stunner considering his past remarks suggesting that he planned to hang around for a while, President Joe Biden’s top medical adviser decided to call it a career after heading up the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since Ronald Reagan’s first term in the White House, although not calling it a retirement, saying that “I plan to pursue the next phase of my career.”

“It has been the honor of a lifetime to have led the NIAID, an extraordinary institution, for so many years and through so many scientific and public health challenges,” Fauci said in a statement. “I am very proud of our many accomplishments. I have worked with – and learned from – countless talented and dedicated people in my own laboratory, at NIAID, at NIH and beyond. To them I express my abiding respect and gratitude.”

“I am particularly proud to have served as the Chief Medical Advisor to President Joe Biden since the very first day of his administration,” Fauci added, not even mentioning former President Donald J. Trump who laid the groundwork for his media superstardom by tabbing him to head up the White House Coronavirus Task Force.

The 81-year-old Fauci’s resignation comes at a tumultuous time for the nation’s discredited health bureaucracy which has suffered a loss of public confidence over the pandemic mismanagement, only days after CDC head Rochelle Walensky announced a restructuring at the agency.

Senator Rand Paul, who has grilled Fauci when he has testified on Capitol Hill, made it clear that the elfin career bureaucrat may be jumping out of the frying pan but is unlikely to escape the fire and could face accountability for his actions.

“Fauci’s resignation will not prevent a full-throated investigation into the origins of the pandemic. He will be asked to testify under oath regarding any discussions he participated in concerning the lab leak,” the Kentucky Republican promised

Other congressional Republicans reacted to the news of Fauci’s coming departure.

“Republicans must remain committed to holding Fauci accountable even after he steps down to make sure no one in his position ever abuses the public trust again,” tweeted GOP Rep. Jim Banks of Indiana, who also serves as chairman of the Republican Study Committee.

“So Dr. Fauci is stepping down in December,” tweeted Congressman Darrell Issa of California. “That won’t stop a Republican Congress from telling the truth about his disastrous tenure and holding him accountable for the mistakes he made and the lies he told.”

“Dr. Fauci is conveniently resigning from his position in December before House Republicans have an opportunity to hold him accountable for destroying our country over these past three years,” tweeted Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona. “This guy is a coward.”

“Fauci is stepping down in December to try and avoid scrutiny from a Republican House that will take over in January,” Colorado Republican Lauren Boebert put the good doctor on notice to expect a house call, as in the House of Representatives.

“Understand this loud and clear, Anthony: We are coming for you whether you retire or not. You will not get away with what you did to America,” she wrote.

Rep. Burgess Owens of Utah tweeted, “Don’t worry, Fauci. We’ll bring you back for your performance review when we take back the House and Senate in Nov.”

“Anthony Fauci has just announced he’s stepping aside in December — just before Republicans take the House & Senate back,” Missouri Senate hopeful Eric Schmitt said. “My advice to Fauci: Clear your 2023 calendar for Senate hearings that will focus on your lies & deceit that destroyed lives & livelihoods.”

More reactions to Fauci’s big announcement:

Former President Barack Obama was much more charitable, showering praise on the “once-in-a-century public health leader.”

“His commitment to the work is unwavering, and he does it with an unparalleled spirit, energy, and scientific integrity,” Biden said in a White House statement.

“Because of Dr. Fauci’s many contributions to public health, lives here in the United States and around the world have been saved. As he leaves his position in the U.S. Government, I know the American people and the entire world will continue to benefit from Dr. Fauci’s expertise in whatever he does next. Whether you’ve met him personally or not, he has touched all Americans’ lives with his work. I extend my deepest thanks for his public service. The United States of America is stronger, more resilient, and healthier because of him,” Biden added.
