Republican Rep. Dan Crenshaw says that his criticism of the “defund the FBI” movement that’s emerged on the right doesn’t mean he supports the federal agency’s raid of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property.
“If you’re a troll on the internet, you might think I defended the FBI. But if you’re a thinking person then you know I didn’t,” he said this weekend in a Fox News interview.
“The first thing I did [after the raid] was go on Fox News and talk about how bad this was for the institution of the FBI. This is clearly a political move. Clearly they could have asked Donald Trump for the documents if they wanted them so bad, but there’s no evidence that they did. So that’s what I’ve been saying over and over again,” he added.
However, he continued, this doesn’t mean he’s OK with defunding the FBI.
“Now that doesn’t mean I want to defund the FBI. And if you do want to defund the FBI, then I can point you to the Democrat Party, because they also want to defund the police,” he said.
He added that he’s tired of the binary choice that’s being presented, which is that either you completely oppose or support the FBI.
“I’m sick of these extremes and this nonsense that gets told, the lies that get spread about me. It’s all BS and we all know it,” he said.
“But don’t agree with Democrats about defunding the police. You can hold them accountable and you can have righteous indignation, righteous anger. And what happened in Mar-a-Lago has actually united all aspects of the Republican Party because we all know that was unjust. But it doesn’t mean you need to agree with Democrats about defunding the police.”
To be clear, the police are not the same thing as the FBI. The FBI is a federal law enforcement agency with far more power than local law enforcement.
Crenshaw, a military veteran with a deep appreciation for all law enforcement, first “defended” the FBI after fellow Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene began calling for the federal agency to be defunded and destroyed.

“I’m impressed Democrats finally got us to say, ‘Defund the FBI.’ That makes you look unserious, when you start talking like that,” he said to Axios, a left-wing outlet, in response to Greene’s calls.
Greene did not appreciate this criticism.
“You know what makes you look unserious to Republican voters? Republican politicians who never actually take the bold actions to stop the Democrat’s relentless destruction of America, and even worse those same Republicans who join the America Last Uniparty,” she tweeted at the time.

Continuing his remarks to Fox News, Crenshaw vowed that he and his colleagues will investigate the FBI’s raid on Trump’s property once Republicans retake the House.
“We’re gonna hold a lot of oversights like [Republican Minority Leader] Kevin McCarthy said – Merrick Garland, you better get your parking spot ready, better save all your documents, because there’s gonna be a lot of oversight when we retake the House. That’s exactly the right move,” he said.
This isn’t the first time he’s butted heads with fellow conservatives. Just last week, he ranted and raved about Fox News host Tucker Carlson criticizing President Joe Biden over his highly flawed withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan.
“Nothing made me angrier than watching Tucker Carlson have the nerve to even criticize Joe Biden because Joe Biden did exactly what Tucker Carlson wanted him to do exactly to the T. Pull out everybody right now, you know, no ifs, ands, or buts, no middle ground whatsoever,” he said on his podcast.
“Not even Trump was, I think, thinking of doing that, you know, we would’ve at least left people in Bagram. They’ve been wrong on every front and it’s getting dangerous. You start to lose people in this kind of situation and you, you can’t have this naïve outlook of the world.”

Earlier this year in the spring, he attacked those Republicans, including Greene, who were against sending even more taxpayer money to Ukraine.
He also slammed Fox News’ Rachel Campos-Duffy over her fierce criticism of the United States’ involvement in the war in Ukraine, accusing her of spouting “Putin’s talking points.”
And lastly, he went on a tear against the anti-war, anti-establishment “new right,” i.e., the populist right.
