Teachers’ union contract says white teachers will be laid off first even if they have seniority

White teachers in a Minnesota school district will be the first to be ousted from their jobs in the event of a reduction in force even if they have seniority, a shocking example of racial discrimination that is justified as being necessary in order to remedy past injustices.

In a new contract between the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers (MFT) and Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) that was part of a deal reached to end a two-week teachers’ strike this spring, non-white instructors will be protected if “excessing” becomes necessary, also being the first to be reinstated over their white colleagues, a likely violation of civil rights laws.

According to the agreement which was obtained by Minnesota-based independent media outlet Alpha News, “if excessing a teacher who is a member of a population underrepresented among licensed teachers in the site, the district shall excess the next least senior teacher, who is not a member of an underrepresented population.”

The agreement specifies a number of programs in which teachers “may be exempted from district-wide layoff outside of seniority order in order to remedy the effects of past discrimination,” and protects teachers who are “members of populations underrepresented among licensed teachers” in the school district.

“The new contract makes Minneapolis one of the only school districts in the country with such seniority-disrupting language, district and union leaders say,” according to the Star Tribune. “They hope it helps foster a teaching staff that better mirrors the demographics of the pupils they work with, more than 60% of them students of color. Currently, about 16% of the district’s tenured teachers and 27% of its probationary teachers are people of color.

The Star Tribune report quotes band teacher and member of the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers executive board Edward Barlow who has high hopes that the district’s overt discrimination against white teachers could serve as an inspiration nationally.

“It can be a national model, and schools in other states are looking to emulate what we did,” he said. “Even though it doesn’t do everything that we wanted it to do, it’s still a huge move forward for the retention of teachers of color.”

The egregious racism of the teachers union caught the attention of investigative journalist Christopher F. Rufo who has tirelessly worked to expose the presence of poisonous Critical Race Theory and discriminatory “woke” indoctrination in American schools, corporations, and institutions.

“The Minneapolis teachers union has negotiated a contract in which the district will fire white teachers first. This is the inevitable endpoint of ‘equity,'” Rufo tweeted with a link to the Alpha News story.

Twitter users reacted to the brazen racial discrimination expressed in the agreement.

A spokesperson for the Minneapolis Public Schools told Fox News Digital, “To remedy the continuing effects of past discrimination, Minneapolis Public Schools and the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers (MFT) mutually agreed to contract language that aims to support the recruitment and retention of teachers from underrepresented groups as compared to the labor market and to the community served by the school district,”

The Alpha News report quotes James Dickey, the senior trial counsel at the Upper Midwest Law Center (UMLC) who says that the agreement is a violation of both state and national constitutions.

“The [collective bargaining agreement] … openly discriminates against white teachers based only on the color of their skin, and not their seniority or merit,” Dickey told Alpha News. “Minneapolis teachers and taxpayers who oppose government-sponsored racism like this should stand up against it,” he said, urging “any Minneapolis taxpayer or teacher who opposes this racial preference system” to email the UMLC.
