‘They wanted this attention’: Former acting AG accuses FBI of intentionally creating ‘firestorm’ with Mar-a-Lago raid

Former Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker accused the FBI of intentionally creating a “firestorm” when they raided former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.

Whitaker appeared on Fox News’s “Fox and Friends” on Friday and was asked by co-host Brian Kilmeade about the FBI’s decision to raid Mar-a-Lago when Trump was out of town in order, as reports claim, to avoid creating a firestorm.

“How clueless are they to think they can slide up with guards, take over a compound for nine hours with the FBI and countless trucks along with aerial, I think, with airplanes and not think it’s going to create a firestorm?” Kilmeade asked. “How much of an emergency can it be if they hold onto the warrant for a couple of days and don’t do anything?”

“Brian, you are absolutely right,” Whitaker replied. “This has caused a complete firestorm. They should have anticipated. And it does demonstrate how insulted on the fifth floor of the Department of Justice is. [Attorney General] Merrick Garland said one thing that I just disagree with. And he said that this, obviously DOJ policy, they need to use the least intrusive means [in] obtaining this evidence.”

“In this case, they went in with dozens of agents to execute a search warrant,” he continued. “And there had to be a way to not cause this firestorm. They didn’t want to do it, they wanted this attention.”

Kilmeade appeared shocked at the notion.

“Really, they wanted this attention,” he said. “They wanted this attention, you think?”

“Brian, they were so many other ways to get this information,” Whitaker explained. “They could have negotiated or turned up the heat with a second subpoena.”

Instead, said Whitaker, the FBI elected to take a different approach.

“They took this step and they crossed a line that they intentionally did and they knew that it was going to cause this firestorm and now they have it,”  he stated. “And it seems to me they didn’t get what they wanted when they executed a search warrant, so they’re trying to walk it back.”

“It’s going to be very interesting in the coming days what we learn,” he added.

As BizPac Review reported, Attorney General Merrick Garland revealed on Thursday that it was he who “personally approved” the unprecedented raid on Trump’s private residence, ostensibly to locate classified nuclear weapons documents believed to be taken from the White House by the former president.

His comments came moments after attorneys at the Justice Department filed a motion seeking to unseal the search warrant.

Trump took to Truth Social and urged the DOJ to “Release the documents now!”

“Not only will I not oppose the release of documents related to the unAmerican, unwarranted, and unnecessary raid and break-in of my home in Palm Beach, Florida, Mar-a-Lago, I am going a step further by ENCOURAGING the immediate release of those documents,” Trump stated, “even though they have been drawn up by radical left Democrats and possible future political opponents, who have a strong and powerful vested interest in attacking me, much as they have done for the last 6 years.”

Meanwhile, Garland dismissed any suggestion that the DOJ acted in a politically-motivated manner.

“Upholding the rule of law means applying the law evenly without fear or favor,” the attorney general said. “Under my watch, that is precisely what the Justice Department is doing.”
