In another win for unborn children, the Indiana State Senate passed a bill that would ban virtually all abortions after a fertilized egg is implanted in the uterus if it is ultimately signed into law.
The measure passed narrowly with the minimum 26 votes required and will now move to the Republican-controlled House for approval.
Senate bill 1 argued in a special Saturday session contains minimal exceptions for rape and incest as well as if the mother’s life is in peril. In order to qualify for the exceptions of rape and incest, a signed and notarized affidavit testifying to the incident would be required of the expectant mother.
Republican Sen. Mike Young proposed that the law be amended to remove the rape and incest exceptions and argued that the only plausible reason for an abortion would be if the mother’s life was at risk.
“And what you’re telling me is if they rape the woman, we oughta kill the baby,” Young said according to WFYI-TV. “That is not right and I will never, ever accept that.”

Republican author of the bill, Sen. Sue Glick was not “100 percent pleased” with the final bill, but indicated that she could “live with it,” and felt that it was a “huge step forward in protecting the life of the unborn children in our state,” Fox News reported.
Many others agreed that it was the moral thing to do.

In total, 10 Democrats and 10 Republicans voted against the bill.
Republican Sen. Vaneta Becker spoke out against the bill and argued, “Women deserve to have us protect their lives and free will. Senate Bill 1 destroys both. Shame on us for doing this.”
“We are considering dictating medical decisions with blinders and ignorant of the astounding, unintended consequences we are creating,” Becker said.
Democratic State Sen. Tim Lanane also condemned the bill and argued that those that voted in favor ignored experts and the majority voice of the people.
“Disappointed but unsurprised that Republicans shoved their widely unpopular abortion ban through committee,” he wrote on social media. “61 people testified on SB1, and NONE were in favor. This is clearly a majority that doesn’t listen to its citizens or the opinions of experts.”

In its current state, the attorney general is given concurrent jurisdiction to prosecute crimes under the bill if the county prosecutor refuses to. The House may consider the bill and possible amendments, as early as next week.
