Dillard’s fires longtime employee for allegedly calling black shopper the N-word in front of his young son; dad oozes ‘grace and honor’

Dillard’s has terminated an employee who worked at a Dallas location after a video taken in the aftermath of his alleged racist remarks to a black customer went viral, issuing a statement that the incident was determined to be a violation of company standards.

In the video taken at the department store chain’s NorthPark Centre store — which does not show the employee named Homer uttering the racial epithet under his breath but audibly enough so that it was allegedly heard by the man’s 10-year-old son — the customer calmly confronts the now-unemployed man who had worked at Dillard’s for 20 years.

The footage which was posted to Instagram by the customer’s cousin begins shortly after the incident when the employee is said to have muttered “‘f**king n*****,” after being asked where the fitting rooms were.

“My 10-year-old son heard you call me a “‘f**king n*****” and I want you to know that it’s unacceptable,” the customer said. “You shouldn’t do that. You’re too old. My family has patronized Dillard’s for many years. I carry myself with honor. I would never disrespect any human being by calling them outside of their name. That is what you did. You don’t know the impact of what you’ve done to my son.”

Homer claims inexplicably that he hurt his leg, hardly an excuse for such disrespectful remarks.

“You hurt your leg and you said ‘f**king n*****?” the incredulous shopper asked.

After asking Homer how long he had worked a Dillard’s, the customer said, “Over 20 years and you’re acting that way. You don’t know, you don’t know what straw could break the camel’s back, you don’t know.”

“I have grace and honor, and I was raised with morals and values, but I lost a lot, I lost my mother, I lost my mother-in-law,  I lost my sister, all last year,” he said. “You don’t know what mental state the next human being could be in and it wouldn’t be cop, it wouldn’t be a security guard, it wouldn’t be nobody that can stop me from getting on your *ss if I wanted to, you understand me?”

“So I want you to know that, think about that. It doesn’t matter about the age,” the man continued. “Treat human beings with respect and morals and values. You understand that? Now I have to go home, and correct my 10-year-old not to be a damn idiot. Don’t act a fool. Don’t be like Homer. Homer don’t have respect for my kind, or any human being.”

“This ain’t a black and white issue, this is a idiot issue and I want it to be addressed, so I told your supervisor,” he calmly said. “We have you, we have everybody heard you say it, I want the whole store to know, you was dead wrong and I just bought this stuff, at Dillard’s with Homer working here.”

“I wouldn’t treat anybody like that man, and you’re dead wrong,” the customer concluded. “So may God bless you and you keep moving forward and I’ll pray for you.”

In a statement posted to Twitter, Dillard’s wrote, “The allegations made against our former employee were promptly investigated, found to be in clear violation of our standards, and his employment with Dillard’s was immediately terminated.”

The father, Muhammad Karim credited his faith for his restraint, telling CBS DFW, “Prophet Muhammad said don’t be angry, don’t be angry and I’ll be honest with you, I was angry, I was livid.”

Karim said that he didn’t buy Homer’s excuse of cursing because he hurt his leg, “Life doesn’t work that way, this is repetitive behavior.”

“We’re sorry he’s fired, but let’s move on,” Karim said, telling the outlet that his son has been traumatized. “He thinks every white person is out to get him,” adding that his wife is also struggling over the slur.

“I can’t allow for my situation, I can’t allow for my feelings and my emotions to overshadow them at this particular time,” an emotional Karim told CBS DFW. “So, I’m doing the best that I can to protect them…”
