A big item in the news this week is the dramatic clash in Senate hearings between Sen. Josh Hawley and a massively arrogant Berkeley law professor. Prof. Khiara Bridges asks Hawley if he believes that men can get pregnant. When he says no, she accuses him of “opening trans people to violence.” To Bridges, Hawley’s denial means he “denies the existence of trans people.” In other words, he is transphobic.
“I want to recognize that your line of questioning is transphobic,” Bridges said, “and it opens up trans people to violence by not recognizing them.” This is the same argument used against critics of Islam, who are called Islamophobic. Anyone who criticizes Islam is deemed to be Islamophobic. Anyone who criticizes trans persons is deemed transphobic. The Left has accustomed us to these outlandish accusations that amount to nothing more than an attempt to shut down opposing viewpoints.
Students at our law schools are being taught that opposing arguments are not permitted when they contradict leftist talking points. How can you be an attorney without presenting opposing arguments? By accommodating disturbed professors like Bridges, Berkeley and other law schools are training a generation of legal imbeciles. “Imagine paying $44,066 plus room and board to be taught this nonsensical fake science,” said author Brigitte Gabriel. This cannot bode well for the future of the legal profession.
When Sen. Hawley says that men can’t get pregnant, he is not advocating violence against anyone. He is exposing the absurdity of the trans agenda. The real question inherent in Bridges’ statement is, do we have the right to deny the existence of trans people? Is biological sex a fact of nature or is it a social construct, something that people got together and made up—in other words, a product of society? Prof. Bridges believes in the latter. She believes that any individual is free to identify their gender. If a woman decides she is a man, that proves that men are capable of bearing children.
Michael Mascolo, M.D., does not buy that argument. “There are no separable biological and cultural aspects of a person,” Mascolo explains in Psychology Today. “To identify myself in terms of a particular gender category does not take away my sex. There is no social organization that is independent of biology.”
Kara Dansky, women’s advocate and author of The Abolition of Sex, is even more explicit. “Transgender isn’t real,” she says. “It was simply made up. Words like gender identity don’t have any meaning. Every single human being is either a male person or a female person. Sex cannot be changed,” Dansky says. “The obliteration of the material reality of biological sex should scare everyone.”
Transgender does not describe a marginalized group of people who need civil rights protection, Dansky says. “The so-called transgender agenda is being fueled by a massive, vicious, and well-funded industry in the guise of a civil rights movement. It is all a lie.”
The trans agenda is not merely an innocuous notion. It is dangerous. Based on its “gender is cultural” argument, the Left wants to impose sex changes on children who are too young to make an informed decision about their sexuality. Some states want to force doctors to treat children with puberty blockers, hormonal treatments, and sex surgeries. They call it “gender-affirming healthcare.” It is anything but healthy.
President Biden has stated openly that an eight-year-old can decide on his transgenderism. Jack Turban, a research fellow at the Yale School of Medicine, says that doctors should begin applying puberty blockers to children who identify as transgender as early as possible. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton disagrees. Paxton says that the push to have kids permanently change their bodies amounts to child abuse. The question he raises is, “Why is it so important to some to push the LBGTQ agenda on children?”
A number of states recognize the danger to young people. Alabama’s Republican governor signed into law a bill that criminalizes gender-affirming healthcare for transgender youth. There is still a ray of sanity out there on this subject.
“Children should not be subjected to the whims of politically driven adults when it comes to massive bodily mutilation that impairs function for a lifetime—all before the child has experienced puberty,” says author Ben Shapiro. “And society should not be obligated to obey the gender theory nonsense of the radical left, which seeks to confuse as many children as possible in service to a political agenda.”
The glitch in the gender fluid argument comes down to this: If you are a man, you have the right to believe you are a woman. Or a hippopotamus, if you prefer. You can believe any damn thing you want. BUT: You do not have the right to demand that the rest of us should go along with your delusion. It is absurd to pretend that a man is a hippo simply because he wants us to believe it. The same should apply to a man who wants us to believe he is a woman because his penis was surgically removed and he wears a dress and a wig.
North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson has portrayed the radical transgender movement as a new-age pseudo religion whose tenets sharply contradict reality.
“Ain’t but two genders,” Robinson said. “You can go to the doctor and get cut up, you can go down to the dress shop and get made up, you can go down there and get drugged up, but at the end of the day, you are just a drugged-up, dressed-up, made-up, cut-up man or woman.”
“We don’t even need science to prove what gender you are,” Robinson added. “Go around the corner here to the bathroom and drop your pants or whatever you’ve got on, and I can show you what you are.”
“Society has accepted a destructive lie that you can create your own reality and define your own identity,” says Ben Shapiro. “Sex and gender are interconnected. Biological sex corresponds with genital development in the womb. In every human culture—indeed, in every mammalian species—meaningful distinctions between male and female remain.”
There is no “right” that says you can demand whatever you want. If you decide tomorrow morning that you identify as something other than your biological sex, it doesn’t give you the right to demand that everyone should celebrate your decision. All you can hope for is tolerance. The Left has confused tolerance with celebration. Tolerance for a minority group should not imply that the majority must accept and celebrate minority viewpoints. We can be tolerant of so-called transgender individuals without affirming the biological integrity of their choice.
We should be able to accommodate the rights of our minorities without depriving the majority of theirs. We cannot allow Prof. Bridges and her fellow ideological saboteurs to destroy freedom of speech and deny our right to embrace positions that contradict the liberal playbook. Incidentally, if your kid wants to attend law school, suggest to them that Berkeley may not be the best choice.
