Former advisor explains Boris Johnson’s ouster: He went ‘woke’ and ‘forgot he’s a conservative’

Tucker Carlson spoke to Thomas Corbett-Dillon, a former advisor to UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, to try to figure out what it was that caused the flamboyant politician’s sudden and unexpected ouster.

First, a little background. The official story is that Johnson’s resignation was prompted by the sudden resignation, en masse, of a number of senior and junior officials in his cabinet, which made the simple business of running the government nearly impossible for the beleaguered prime minister. Those resignations were in reaction to a number of scandals that have buffeted Johnson’s government, including various hypocritical, non-socially-distanced parties held at Downing Street in the midst of the country’s severe pandemic lockdowns.

The most egregious was probably when Johnson’s staff held parties on the eve of Prince Philip’s funeral, a somber occasion when Queen Elizabeth herself was compelled to sit alone in order to dutifully comply with social-distancing protocols.

There have also been, perhaps inevitably, the standard accusations of sexual harassment and misconduct leveled against one of Johnson’s picks for a senior parliamentary official.

But Carlson was interested in understanding the more fundamental reasons behind Boris Johnson’s fall from grace.

“First the obvious question,” Carlson asked his guest, “what…why did Boris Johnson resign as prime minister—I don’t fully understand this, is there a specific reason?”

“Well, it’s chaos, Tucker, it really is,” Corbett-Dillon replied. “You know, the short of the story is, we elected Boris to be the British Trump. You know, he was going to shake up the system. He was going to deliver Brexit. He was going to stick it to the elites, but he very quickly got sucked in by the sort of globalist agenda.”

Johnson’s government imposed one of the severest lockdown regimes in the world on the citizens of the United Kingdom, in conformity with much of the Anglosphere, and he’s also been a cheerleader for increasing Western involvement in the Russo-Ukrainian conflict.

“You know, he spent a lot of time sucking up to Macron and Merkel, that he forgot he’s a conservative,” Corbett-Dillon added. “As you said, he went very hard on lockdown, very hard on vaccines. He became woke, and then he fully signed up to this Greta Thunberg idea of the world is ending, which is not what the conservative people voted for.”

“You know, Boris was elected by a very large group of working-class voters, that it was the first time they’d ever voted for a conservative politician. And these people want simple things: more jobs, lower taxes, tough on crime, tough on the border, and tough on our enemies. But he got sucked into this globalist agenda that just wasn’t what the people wanted, so eventually, the MPs started listening to the people on the ground and realized that this was not the leader for them anymore,” he explained.

Carlson then asked his guest why it was that Johnson went so astray, after holding out such promise to mend Britain’s broken politics.

“Yeah, he sort of fell in with that elite crowd,” Corbett-Dillon observed, “and he was, you know, traveling the world, he did a lot of time trying to save Ukraine and all of these things. What seems to have happened is the government just lost their way, they didn’t know what they were trying to do, they didn’t know what the policies were.”

“It’s a shame,” he added, “because he had a lot of potential. We were very excited when he…you know, he had everything, he even had the hair like Trump. But it just didn’t come through in the end.”

Carlson concluded the segment by expressing what many are thinking: “So sad. The whole thing is so…and also weird. I hope you get someone better, but it doesn’t look like you’re gonna.”
