Highland Park mayor urges people to dismiss shooter’s creepy social media posts, goes all in for gun ban

The mayor of Highland Park, IL, where the horrific mass shooting at a 4th of July parade took place leaving six dead and over 30 wounded, wasted no time in calling for a ban on guns while ignoring the alleged shooter’s creepy social media posts.

Robert “Bobby” Crimo III is a “person of interest” in the slaughter and was known to Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering on a personal basis. She notably did not address the long trail of tributes to mass shootings and public killings he reportedly left on social media.

She announced that he had legally obtained the weapon suspected of being used in the massacre. The mayor made her statement just before she started calling for more gun control on Tuesday.

In 2013, while on the city council, she helped draft an ordinance banning the possession of assault weapons, according to Politico.

“I don’t know where the gun came from, but I do know that it was legally obtained,” Rotering confusingly told NBC News.

The mayor went on to say that she didn’t believe he was “previously known to police” before the shooting which contradicts earlier statements by law enforcement. Despite that specious claim, she brushed off warning signs that came via the alleged shooter’s rap lyrics and social media posts.

Crimo went by the name “Awake the Rapper” and had songs with disturbing lyrics that were definitely a warning sign.

He also posted drawings of a shooter being gunned down by police and scenes from a mocked-up classroom where Crimo scattered bullets on the floor.

His mental stability was severely questionable according to the Daily Mail. The alleged shooter’s final post on his server was a picture of Budd Dwyer, a Pennsylvania state treasurer who committed suicide on live TV. Crimo apparently approved and stated, “I wish politicians still gave speeches like this.”

He also posted frequently to a message board that apparently discussed graphic depictions of murder, suicide, and death. His most recent post to that board was last week when he posted a video of a beheading according to NBC News.

“We know that several postings really reflected a plan and a desire to commit carnage for a long time in advance,” Rotering noted, further commenting that he “clearly had a mental breakdown” before he went on his killing spree.

Interestingly, she previously defeated the alleged shooter’s father when he ran for mayor.

Rotering was a Cub Scout leader for the alleged shooter when he was little and says she remembers him as a child, “I know him as somebody who was a Cub Scout when I was the Cub Scout leader … He was just a little boy.”

“And it’s one of those things where you step back and you say, ‘What happened? How did somebody become this angry, this hateful, to then take it out on innocent people who literally were just having a family day?'” she asked.

Shying away from his social media proclivities once again, the mayor segued back to gun control, stating that the bigger issue is why “we as a nation allow this to happen with such regularity.”

“At some point, this nation needs to have a conversation about these weekly events involving the murder of dozens of people with legally obtained guns,” she stated on TODAY, CBS News, and other media outlets.

“If that’s what our laws stand for, then I think we need to re-examine the laws,” Rotering asserted, claiming that “our values are askew.”

“We as a country have to have a very strong conversation with ourselves… We’ve been talking about this literally for decades at this point. And it’s one of those things where you ask yourself, ‘If this reflects the values of who we are, what does that say about us as a nation?'” she posited.

“Whether it’s Buffalo, New York, whether it’s Uvalde, Texas, whether it’s Highland Park, Illinois, this is unbelievable to me that this is an acceptable part of who we are as a nation,” the leftist mayor remarked.

“I would rather focus on why do we as a nation allow this to happen with such regularity? Why do we say, ‘Oh ok, that was that?’ I can’t tell you how many mayors I heard from yesterday, mayors that I obviously am aware of because of their own tragedies,” she concluded.
