Culture shock provoked cancel culture for a Michigan college grad who was drummed out of his dream job after posting videos online that earned him the nickname “Bodega Bro.”
24-year-old Griffin Green thought that he was on his way after landing himself a gig with a New York City tech company, Outreach, and relocating from Michigan. But the ink had barely dried on his 12-month lease before the his public reactions to the Big Apple turned the ire of the Twitter mob against him.
The young man was woefully unprepared for the lifestyle and, while staying in the South Bronx, hadn’t known the prevalence of bodegas compared to large grocery store chains. “Ok, so I just moved to New York and I’m going to go grocery shopping,” he said in a viral video, “and so I type in like, ‘grocery stores,’ on my Apple Maps, and every f*cking one I go to … they’re like this sh*t.”

“Like bro, that’s not a grocery store. I’m trying to get, like eggs, yogurt, cheese, sh*t like that. Like, look at this place,” Green railed with amusement as he navigated through his new surroundings.
“Like I’ve literally been to like five of those now, and like, I don’t know what the f*ck I’m about to do for dinner,” he went on in the video that made the rounds on social media earning him the nickname “Bodega Bro.” “Like where are the Krogers and the Whole Foods at? Like I’m about to eat f*cking like cereal and ramen for dinner, like what the f*ck?”
The young man’s posts were slammed by rabble-rousers like Perez Hilton who shared Green’s video and captioned it, “I’m sure this ‘bro’ thought he was being funny, but… did anyone else view this as racist? Or just me?”

Reason went on to report that Green had a number of other videos that earned him backlash, including one where he described going to the gym in an NAACP shirt to better fit in, “I’m in the Bronx for a few weeks so I’m like the only white dude in this whole gym, so I got this NAACP shirt so these people vibe with me more.” In another video, the Michigan transplant reacted to the number of gay people in the city as pride celebrations were underway.
Green had reportedly posted his offer of employment from Outreach to social media which led one Twitter user to share it with the company and state, “I don’t think it’s very flattering to have this type of person representing your company. I would revalue [sic] his employment if I were you.”
They reacted with gratitude and notified the concerned citizen that Green was no longer working for them.
He is no longer an employee of Outreach.

Andrew Schmitt, the vice president of communications for Outreach, claimed to Reason that the termination was because of the company information shared by Green, but his followup remarks belied that, “It is against company policy for employees to leak private and confidential information, and grounds for termination. We remain committed to building our culture that finds strength in our diversity, equity and inclusion–and a company where all can succeed.”
Green had reportedly emailed the human resources department in an effort to get his job back, “All I ask is for a chance to explain myself. This is my dream job and I don’t want it to get taken away because of a stupid tik tok video.”
He had been expecting $2,500 for relocation fee and had signed a 12-month lease in preparing for his new job. Green defended his posts to Reason saying, “It was more of an intent to almost like make fun of myself for being a new person in the city.”
“People can be painted as these mean awful people when really they’re just trying to explore new things,” he went on. “I was exploring New York for the first time…I didn’t know that people do grocery shopping at these corner stores.”
It seems unlikely that “Bodega Bro” will get his job at Outreach back but they might not be the “dream job” he believed they would be after the company learns how nothing good comes from appeasing the demands of the social media mobocracy.
You fired a a man because he moved to NY to work for you and expressed wonder and bemusement at a new environment. I’m going to recommend to my team leads that your company’s products be blacklisted from use in any projects in my division.

Here’s the thing… I would never have been your customer, and I would never have cared if you left the dude be.
Now I will find your competition and encourage others to patronize them instead.

My team was just about to recommend Outreach to our executives. We won’t be doing that anymore. You are blacklisted.
