Darrell Brooks Jr., the man accused of killing six people after using an SUV to plow into a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin, is now trying to plea that his mental state makes him unfit to stand trial.
On Monday, Brooks’ lawyer announced that he is going to plead “not guilty by mental disease or defect,” a marked change from his simply “not guilty” plea entered in February, according to Fox News.
Brooks has been charged with 83 counts related to the holiday tragedy and is specifically facing six counts of first-degree homicide. Every one of those counts carries a life sentence if he is convicted.
Waukesha County Circuit Judge Jennifer Dorow also denied a petition to move the location of Brooks’ trial and smacked down the suggestion to bring in jurors from outside the county.
