DC Mayor Bowser displays her own lib version of American flags on Pennsylvania Ave for Flag Day

Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser took the unprecedented step on Monday of ordering fraudulent 51-star American flags to be flown on Pennsylvania Avenue ahead of Flag Day on June 14.

She mandated the flying of the defaced flags “as a reminder to Congress and the nation that the 700,000 tax-paying American citizens living in Washington, DC demand to be recognized.”

“On Flag Day, we celebrate American ideals, American history, and American liberty. But the very foundation of those ideals, and the basis for our liberty, is representation,” Bowser declared in a statement. “DC’s disenfranchisement is a stain on American democracy – a 220-year-old wrong that demands to be righted.”

There are 50 stars on the American flag… one for each state of the Union. The District of Columbia is not a recognized state, instead, it was deliberately set aside since it is the Capitol of the nation in a separate federal district intended to be unaffiliated with state politics. Democrats desperately want to change the status of that district for political reasons.

Hawaii was the 50th state to be admitted to the Union on August 21, 1959, and the current flag was ratified on July 4, 1960.

D.C. has a population of more than 700,000 residents, which is greater than Vermont or Wyoming, according to the DC Statehood FAQ page. The district does not have a voting member in the House and has no representation in the Senate. Democrats point out that D.C pays more in federal taxes than 21 other states.

Every year, Democrats seek statehood for the district. This year is no different. In April, House Democratic lawmakers passed the “DC Admission Act,” which would make Washington, D.C. the 51st state and grant its residents full representation in Congress. D.C. leans left politically, so the move would be very advantageous to Democrats. The act passed the House but is expected to fail in the Senate.

Republicans have long contended that since D.C.’s establishment is based on Article 1, section 8, clause 17 of the Constitution, any change to the status of the district must come in the form of a constitutional amendment, not via legislation from Congress. They’ve also argued that D.C. statehood is a power grab by the left intended to expand the majority in the Senate by adding two more senators.

“As Americans nationwide brace for a decision on the future of Roe v. Wade, we are also reminded that DC’s disenfranchisement impacts not just Americans living in DC, but Americans nationwide who share our values,” Bowser remarked. “While the stakes are even higher for Washingtonians, we stand shoulder to shoulder with the majority of Americans who believe in a woman’s right to choose.”

She also went there on gun control, intimating that the majority of D.C. residents are on the same page “with the majority of Americans” calling for “common-sense gun reforms.”

“We are at an inflection point for American democracy, and it is within the Senate’s power to do the right thing, embrace representation, and move DC statehood forward to the President’s desk,” Bowser asserted.

Mayor Bowser is up for reelection in November 2022. She is seeking her third term as mayor. Bowser was first elected in 2014.

June 14 marks the 106th Flag Day celebrated in the United States.

      Because an extra star, actually representing your fellow citizens who do have equal representation, isn’t exactly a defacement.

  8. I’ve always wondered if Mayor Bowser was the daughter of Bowser from Sha Na Na. Regardless, Washington DC is represented by a Representative in the House of Representatives. Washington D.C. was never intended to be a State. It was always intended to be the Seat of the Government for the USA, but never an individual State. See Article I, Section 8,

    1. You could not be more wrong. The maximum size of the District is prescribed by the CONSTITUTION. The minimum size is a matter of an Act of Congress.

      As an example, the Federal District could be made 400 square blocks, or roughly 1 square mile. And the remaining 60 square miles could be made the State of Columbia. And all it requires is an Act of Congress.

      A Navy vet who proclaims his patriotism should actually know that already.

      BTW……I’ll spare you from knowing what a “Barry” means in my neck of the woods.

  12. Nice try horrible mayor. Defacing the flag is a crime: A penalty of up to $10,000 is imposed under Code * 700 for defacing the flag of the United States. A person who knowingly mutilates, defaces, physically defiles, burns, maintains on the ground or floor, or tramples upon any flag of the United States is liable for a fine or imprisonment of not more than one year.

    1. Except, of course, adding a start that represents American citizens is hardly defacing, defiling or mutilating the flag.
      Now………..plastering Trump’s name or image across the middle of it would be a different matter. Right?

  15. Muriel, I realize that you might be unhappy not having representation but let me tell you, having representation isn’t all that great. I live in Arizona and can’t wait to vote out my two senators. Second, you don’t like not having representation, move, that’s one liberty you do have. Third, read in the constitution why you don’t having representation. That’s three strikes and your out. Get over it.

  16. DC was set up as an “Industry Free Zone” by the framers of the constitution. There was a reason for this. They wanted Government to stay small and focused. Having a huge population living in the Capital to be closer to the Federal Treasury, while not working was exactly why this is so. If you don’t like it, move out. Nothing there is holding you from moving to a state, very close by, where you can commute if you have a job. If every adult that was living off of Federal Subsidies had to leave, because they dried up, the number of ineligible, or unrepresented would plummet. Senators and Congressmen, for the most part, have residency in their districts for voting. Most staffers do not live in DC. All Federal Housing projects should be dismantled as they encourage the poor to stay poor and live where there are no jobs.

  18. Article I, section 8, clause 17 spells out DC’s status in plain English. Article V spells out the only two ways to change this status. Everything else is just noise. The Constitution, read and understand.

  20. I’m “offended” this woman of color desecrated our Flag. And I am truly offended with good reason because she’s showing no respect for the Flag of the United States. Furthermore it is with good reason DC is not a state as our founding fathers knew any state being the Capitol of our country would hold too much power in the Congress so they created the DC from Philadelphia for that reason. If the citizens of DC don’t like the fact they have no Senators and only a non-voting member of Congress they should move to a state. But I seriously doubt this is a concern of most DC residents, only Democrat politicians trying to keep control of Congress. That is why they’re trying to make PR a state which most citizens there don’t want it.

  24. Washington DC needs to be returned to the State of Maryland from whence it came from. The area of what is now known as Arlington and parts of Alexandria was returned to Virginia after it became apparent it wasn’t needed. Therefore parts of Washington DC can and should be returned to Maryland as it originally was a part of. There is no need to create them as a separate state of the US. Palin and simple. This is the only and the fairest solution to take care of the voting representation they claim they want.

That equates to roughly 1 square mile, leaving 60 or so square miles for the new state of Columbia.

      We should at least try to be intellectually honest. Are they both free speech, or are they both defacements?

        1. The constitution stipulates the maximum size of the District. Not it’s minimum size. And the boundaries of the District, plus the former carve-outs it now incorporates, have already been altered through various acts of Congress. Not by virtue of an Amendment.
          An educated American would know that.

    Neither a law, nor some judge’s activism can change the constitution!

        1. Wishful thinking. The predicate, of course, is that Maryland wants the land retroceded. It does not.
          Virginia actually wanted Alexandria returned. They started the movement as early as 1836 as a defense against a push to abolish slavery in the District, and therefore in Alexandria County. The Virginia legislature passed a unanimous resolution that preceded the Congressional legislation. Congress just didn’t decided to dump, or slough off, Alexandria County in 1847.

          The latest poll of Marylanders on the issue, however, showed that only about 20% wanted the District land NOT included in a revised Federal District, receded.
