President Joe Biden made an outlandish claim about 9mm guns on Monday, asserting that there is no “rational basis” for such high-caliber weapons for self-protection.
“A 9 mm bullet blows the lung out of the body,” Biden said. “So the idea of these high-caliber weapons — there’s simply no rational basis for it in terms of self-protection, hunting.”
During an interview on the South Lawn of the White House Monday, Biden expanded on his previous comments on gun control. The Memorial Day remarks come one day after the Bidens visited Uvalde, Texas where 19 children and two teachers were slaughtered by an unhinged armed killer.
While in the small town, Biden met with the families of the victims and survivors of the massacre to do his requisite political grandstanding. The shooting has rekindled calls for stricter gun control on the left.
The president indicated that it was “hard to say” how close Congress was getting to gun reforms because he hasn’t been directly negotiating with Republicans.
He reiterated his opposition to 100-round magazines while speaking to the press.
“There’s only one reason for something that can fire 100 shots,” he remarked. Then he spoke about hearings he held as a senator on “rational gun laws,” according to a White House pool report.
Then Biden brought up a trauma doctor in New York who allegedly showed him an X-ray decades ago when he was a senator while talking about “probably” being able to remove a 22-caliber bullet lodged in someone’s lung to save their life. He followed this remark with the erroneous comment that a 9mm bullet “blows a lung out of the body.”
Biden, talking about "rational gun laws," says this morning that a "9 mm bullet blows the lung out of the body."
"There’s simply no rational basis for it in terms of self protection, hunting," he added, per pool report.

The 9 mm handgun is hugely popular for self-defense and concealed carry in the United States.
Yeah no, 9mm doesn’t do that.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) stated on ABC Sunday that Congress is holding “serious” bipartisan negotiations on legislation that would curb gun violence. Biden stated that he believes “things have gotten so bad that everybody is getting more rational about it – at least that’s my hope and prayer.”
Sen. Chris Murphy to ABC: "I'm at the table in a more significant way right now with Republicans and Democrats than ever before … There are more Republicans interested in talking about finding a path forward [on legislation] this time than I've ever seen since Sandy Hook."

The president claimed the Second Amendment “was never absolute.”
He went on to add, “You couldn’t buy a cannon when the Second Amendment was passed,” which is a spurious claim he has made before that Washington Post fact-checkers have examined and found to be false.
“The Constitution, the Second Amendment was never absolute. You couldn’t buy a cannon when the Second Amendment was passed,” Biden said. “I think things have gotten so bad that everybody is getting more rational about it.”

Is it too much to ask that the man in charge of the country, who is trying to dismantle people's constitutional rights, at least have the slightest clue what he's talking about? https://t.co/rF1GnoJJMR

Biden pledged to take action on guns while visiting Robb Elementary School and a local church in Uvalde, where a crowd of demonstrators chanted “Do something!”
“We will,” Biden responded while giving the crowd a thumbs up.
Biden was asked on Monday by reporters if he now feels more motivated to act on gun control and said, “I’ve been pretty motivated all along.”
“The folks who were victimized, their families, they spent three hours and 40 minutes with me. They waited all that time. Some came two hours early. The pain is palpable. I think a lot of it is unnecessary. I’m going to continue to push,” he declared.
Asked if he had a responsibility to act, Biden replied, “I can’t dictate this stuff.”
“I can do the things I’ve done, and any executive action I can take, I’ll continue to take. But I can’t outlaw a weapon. I can’t change a background check. I can’t do that,” the president stated laying action at the feet of Congress on gun control.
