Parents furious after high school loo-natics ditch bathroom doors to create ‘non-gendered’ facilities

A Southern Australia public high school has enraged and horrified parents by removing outer bathroom doors in order to create “non-gendered” facilities and in the process sacrificing privacy by exposing toilet cubicles to students and teachers walking past the restroom.

Peter Kuss, who is the principal of Golden Grove High School in Adelaide, sent out a letter on May 12 to parents and caregivers informing them of bathroom changes that were being implemented according to the Daily Mail.

“The health, safety and wellbeing of all young people is important to us. We understand that accessing toilet facilities whilst at school can cause anxiety for some students,” he wrote in the letter. “The guidelines for the provision of student toilets has evolved over time.”

“New toilets provided as part of the recent capital works project… have been constructed to meet the new standards,” Kuss remarked referring to the high school’s $15 million redevelopment project.

Although the outer doors of the bathrooms are being removed, they are being retrofitted with “lockable, non-gendered, individual cubicles, with handwashing facilities included inside the cubicle, accessed directly from common spaces or open corridors.”

Pictures show the bathrooms with the outer doors taken off but both bathrooms still have “boys only” and “girls only” signs above the entranceways.

The principal is asserting that the school was “taking the steps to modify the design of the existing toilet blocks so they mimic as much as possible the look and feel of the toilet facilities in the new buildings.”

“Hence, we will be removing the outer doors leading into the existing toilet blocks so the toilets in these spaces are more easily accessible from the foyers,” he contended. “We believe this action will provide greater safety for student usage and will more closely align our older toilet blocks with the new standards.”

Parents were furious after receiving the notification according to The Advertiser.

One mother bluntly stated that her children “no longer feel safe and feel their privacy has been compromised.”

“The cubicles on some of the toilets can be seen by students and teachers walking past,” she remarked. “I’ve had other parents tell me their kids will not use the toilets either.”

Comments on The Advertiser’s Facebook post concerning the bathrooms indicated parents felt the changes went “too far.”

“Umm I’m all for gender equality but this is too far,” one concerned parent said.

“When kids already hold off going to the toilet all day. My son goes here and doesn’t use the toilets. I’m guessing this is the school’s way of combating their fight against vaping in the toilets at the health of those who don’t and are two afraid to use the toilets,” another parent wrote.

“Would pull my child out of there… that’s wrong I agree with gender neutral bathrooms however kids also have a right to feel safe in a gendered bathroom,” a commenter claimed.

“They have non-gender toilets. This is about nosy staff wanting to check that students are using toilets to go to the toilet, rather than to hang out by the sinks, doing make-up,” another parent remarked.

The school is defending the decision.

An Education Department spokesperson stated, “Students’ privacy isn’t compromised. All the cubicles have lockable doors and only hand washing areas are visible from hallways or foyers.”

Gender-neutral bathrooms have become a European and American obsession. Even TALK TV host Piers Morgan is calling it a crazy trend.
