Dem Rep Tlaib introduces resolution to recognize ‘catastrophe’ of Israel’s birth

The Squad, led by Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), teetered on the brink of alienating Democratic Jews Monday by introducing a resolution that recognizes the “Nakba,” which means “catastrophe” and is often used by Palestinians typically in reference to the establishment of the state of Israel.

The resolution comes a week and a half after Israel’s Independence Day. That holiday coincides with the Palestinian commemoration of Nakba Day.

The proposed legislation purportedly calls for America to “commemorate the Nakba through official recognition and remembrance.” The resolution also asserts that this “refers not only to a historical event but to an ongoing process of Israel’s expropriation of Palestinian land and its dispossession of the Palestinian people that continues to this day.”

“Today, I introduced a resolution recognizing the Nakba (catastrophe), where 400 Palestinian towns and villages were destroyed, over 700,000 Palestinians uprooted from their homes, and made refugees,” Tlaib tweeted.

“On this day, we must promote human rights & justice. The Palestinian people since the 48 Nakba have been living under oppression and violent racism. Silence + blank checks enables more death and violence,” she added, referencing the year Israel was officially recognized.

“The Nakba is well-documented and continues to play out today. We must acknowledge that the humanity of Palestinians is being denied when folks refuse to acknowledge the war crimes and human rights violations in apartheid Israel. #Nakba74!” Tlaib ranted.

“A special thank you to @RepMarieNewman, @BettyMcCollum04, @Ilhan & @RepAOC for joining me as original cosponsors of the #NakbaResolution and to all the incredible people all across America who continue to stand for what is right, no matter how hard the fight may be,” she tweeted, thanking her Squad comrades for their support. “Another special thank you to @RepCori and @RepBowman for joining as cosponsors.”

Tlaib is the daughter of Palestinian immigrants and has been repeatedly chastised for attacking Israel and Jews. She introduced the resolution on behalf of herself and Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Cori Bush (D-MO), Jamaal Bowman (D-NY), Marie Newman (D-IL), and Betty McCollum (D-MN).

The resolution asserts that Palestinians opposed the UN’s 1947 recommendation to partition the territory then known as Palestine into two states. It charges that before Israel declared independence on May 14, 1948, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were forced to flee their homes “often after attacks by Zionist militias.” Notably, it does not acknowledge that invading Arab nations used some of those areas to attack Israel.

Despite what the resolution contends, the State Department’s Office of the Historian claims that after the UN resolution, “[f]ighting began with attacks by irregular bands of Palestinian Arabs… against Jewish cities, settlements and armed forces.”
