Biden admin and ‘fact checkers’ denial of free crack pipes doesn’t add up, new report claims

Washington Free Beacon investigative journalist Patrick Hauf has doggedly gone after the Biden administration’s dispersal of safe-smoking kits, claiming that he has verified there are crack pipes in a number of them despite fact-checkers asserting the media outlet was lying in February when they broke the story.

“Crack pipes are distributed in safe-smoking kits up and down the East Coast, raising questions about the Biden administration’s assertion that its multimillion-dollar harm reduction grant program wouldn’t funnel taxpayer dollars to drug paraphernalia,” Hauf wrote.

The reported discovery came after the Washington Free Beacon paid visits to five harm-reduction organizations in different cities and called over two dozen others. Hauf asserts that there were crack pipes in kits found in facilities located in Baltimore, Boston, New York City, Richmond, and DC.

The explosive original story concerning the kits was posted in February by the Washington Free Beacon. The media outlet reported that a $30 million harm-reduction program was going to fund the distribution of free crack pipes in “safe-smoking kits.”

When the news broke, the White House was quick to respond with White House press secretary Jen Psaki adamantly denying the charge.

“They were never a part of the kit, it was inaccurate reporting,” she claimed concerning the crack pipes. “A safe-smoking kit may contain alcohol swabs, lip balm, and other materials to promote hygiene and reduce the transmission of diseases.”

The Washington Free Beacon admits that the contents of the kits vary from one organization to another and not all of them contain crack pipes. But the major organizations they visited in those five cities all reportedly contained crack pipes and other drug paraphernalia to assist in the use of heroin, cocaine, and crystal methamphetamine. Using that as a guideline, they posit that most of the kits distributed across the country probably contain crack pipes.

All of the centers that were visited were health-focused nonprofits and government agencies that could potentially start to receive funding in May from the Biden administration’s $30 million grant program.

“None of the organizations responded to inquiries about whether they applied for government grants. It is not clear which organizations will receive those grants, nor has the administration said how it will ensure the kits will not contain crack pipes. The Department of Health and Human Services, which will oversee the Biden grant program, declined to provide a list of groups that have applied for funding, citing ‘confidentiality.’ The Biden administration is set to announce grant recipients on May 15,” the Beacon reported.

The findings by the outlet directly contradict claims from a number of fact-checkers who all deemed the reporting to be false.

One headline by USA Today asked, “What’s inside a safe smoking kit?” and answered, “No, it’s not a crack pipe.” The Washington Free Beacon claims the outlet based its fact-check solely on the Biden administration’s denial concerning crack pipes being in the kits.

The outlet conducted a survey of over two dozen harm reduction organizations. Not all of them distribute safe-smoking kits. Those that do, reportedly almost always provide crack pipes.
