Rolando Salinas, the mayor of Eagle Pass, Texas, where a National Guardsman recently drowned trying to save illegal immigrants, is still waiting to hear from the Biden administration about ending Title 42 which could potentially swamp the small town as migrants swarm across the border.

The Biden administration has claimed that it is working with local officials in the town according, to the Washington Examiner.

“Nobody has reached out to me or to the city. I haven’t heard from anyone,” remarked Mayor Rolando Salinas even in the wake of the drowning of the National Guardsman.

“I wish our federal government stepped up even a little more just to give us some direction, or I would like to hear a plan as to what they’re doing to counter the possibility of a surge in people on the border. I think we deserve that — as border mayors, as people living in the United States — an explanation,” said Salinas, a newly elected Democrat who began his first term last year.

The Department of Homeland Security issued a six-point plan last week that laid out how it plans to handle the influx of illegal immigrants when Title 42, a Trump-era pandemic policy, is ended allowing those crossing the border to increase exponentially. The policy is responsible for turning away many illegal immigrants at the border.

The plan contends that US border officials and the Southwest Border Coordination Center task force would “continue to engage extensively with state and local governments” to “ensure close operational coordination and support ongoing local planning efforts.”

“This regular coordination includes a focus on noncitizen transport and capacity planning, resolving logistical challenges, and addressing community concerns through shared solutions,” DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas claimed in a memo.

Salinas is a personal injury attorney who lives in the 29,000-person town while also serving as the mayor there. He asserts that he has no idea what Biden’s plan realistically is.

“It’s not really a plan to prevent a massive influx of people to come into the United States. It’s more of how they’re going to do it — to facilitate increasing capacity at the [nongovernmental organization],” Salinas remarked. “You’re making it so efficient. … It’s like counterproductive.”

Eagle Pass is reportedly seeing 2,000 illegal immigrants coming across from Mexico every day. They are only able to take half of those into custody according to the mayor. Of those 1,000, half are said to be released and allowed to remain in the U.S. while they await a determination on their immigration status.

Salinas says he has heard from the state of Texas and is working with officials. Republican Gov. Greg Abbott sent in National Guard soldiers as part of Operation Lone Star last year to help the town out and protect citizens. The soldiers assisted in detaining illegal migrants and installed barbed wire fences. They also set up shipping containers in areas near downtown to funnel illegal immigrants to desired areas.

The Border Patrol has proposed that Salinas designate a public golf course to detain the 10,000-20,000 migrants expected to cross the river when Title 42 ends. The mayor immediately nixed that idea, saying emphatically, “Hell no,” according to the Washington Examiner.

Title 42 is slated to end on May 23. The potentially catastrophic move was temporarily stayed by a federal judge but is expected to still take place.
