Senate Democrat says it’s time for US to consider when to send troops to Ukraine

A Senate Democrat openly contradicted himself during a Sunday interview, doubling down on calls for open war against Russia and arguing that Russian President Vladimir Putin “will only stop when we stop him.”

Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) made an appearance on “Face the Nation” where CBS host Margaret Brennan asked the lawmaker to clarify remarks he had made earlier in the week. On Thursday, Coons had been speaking virtually at the University of Michigan when he had asserted the Russian invasion of Ukraine had turned into a “Cuban missile crisis moment.”

“We are in a very dangerous moment where it is important that on a bipartisan and measured way we in Congress and the administration come to a common position about when we are willing to go the next step and to send not just arms but troops to the aid in defense of Ukraine,” Coons said. “If the answer is never then we are inviting another level of escalation in brutality by Putin.”

After reminding the senator of his comments, Brennan asked, “Are you arguing that President Biden was wrong when he said he would not send troops to Ukraine? Are you asking him to set a red line?”

“I think those of us in Congress who have a critical role in setting foreign policy and in advising the president in terms of his decisions as commander-in-chief need to look clearly at the level of brutality,” Coons began as he framed his response. “This is a moment of enormous challenge for all of us and I deeply respect President Biden’s leadership in pulling together the West, imposing crushing sanctions on Russia and in bringing to this fight countries that had stayed on the sidelines before.”

While asserting that Biden’s leadership has been “steady and constructive,” Coons continued on to argue against the point he had just made about the success of sanctions and the united front against Russian aggression.

“If Vladimir Putin, who has shown us how brutal he can be,” the senator said, “is allowed to just continue to massacre civilians, to commit war crimes throughout Ukraine without NATO, without the West coming more forcefully to his aid, I deeply worry that what’s going to happen next is that we will see Ukraine turn into Syria.”

“The American people cannot turn away from this tragedy in Ukraine. I think the history of the 21st century turns on how fiercely we defend freedom in Ukraine and that Putin will only stop when we stop him,” Coons concluded as part of a direct call for military intervention from U.S. Armed Forces.

In addition to contradicting his claims about Biden’s success holding back Russia, Coons also did a complete turnabout from remarks made in January where he told Greta Van Susteren, “I would not support sending American troops into Ukraine in response to a Russian invasion, because frankly, I think we would simply be sacrificing them.”

Coons was dragged on social media for his apparent admitted willingness to sacrifice American lives, especially in light of his never having served in the military himself.

“So,” journalist Glenn Greenwald wrote, “when he advocates that the US send troops to fight Russia in Ukraine, he means other families.”

  1. I agree coons… just as soon as you, your sons and daughters, and grandkids who are of age enlist and go first. democrat and republican elitists will fight till the last blue collar kid is killed in combat.

  2. Screw Putin and Biden and the threats Putin put out there. We should have been there before the hoopla started. As far as Im concerned , yesterday . Biden is a coward and its showing everywhere. This wouldnt be happening if Trump was still in office. Just think how much better off we would be right now. He did so very much his first term. Just think what he could have done with a second term. America should hang its head in shame. Instead we have an idiot trying to appease criminals here in the U.S. and around the world.

  3. Coons is dead wrong on this issue. We just got out of a 20 yr. war, and did so very badly with President Squint in office. Also, Afghanistan showed us his Generals apparently aren’t all that great too, given the way he got us out. We lost 13 American heroes due to his ignorance, not to mention the many hurt, and he left many AMERICAN CITIZENS there, and seems to have forgotten all about them. No, we never want this man having any say in the conducting of any war. It seems his Generals give very poor advice, or he doesn’t listen to them. I’m all for sending supplies, but no boots on the ground. One would think we are pretty much tapped out, after all the wars we’ve fought lately. Coons is a democrat, and after his actions with Sen. Flake during the phony impeachment of President Trump, IMO, he can keep his opinions to himself, because they don’t appear to be worth much. I know he’s the MSM’s go-to guy for an opinion, and he appears to be about as much a media hound as Fauci, especially the liberal media.

Sen Coons really needs to be put in his place. Biden has destroyed our ability’s to go to war without years of destruction and sadly it may come to our shores this time. He better think about that before saying such things

    1. Its a fledgling Democratic Nation trying to get started after being part of the USSR for many years. They call out ot Nato for help and get nothing . Its our war in that we should be helping our allies. Like it or not , the Ukraine is one of them. Maybe not officially but in heart and spirit they are. I know there are those there that are just looking for an opertunity to make some cash but inspite of them I feel we are obligated to help , even with all thats going on in our nation. I just wish Trump was at the helm. We wouldnt even be having this discussion because Putin knew Trump wouldnt put up with his crap at all. Trump had the ability to speak nice and play hard. He wasnt afraid to figuratively pull the trigger. Hes a hell of a lot smarter than the douche bag whose in Trumps office now.

  11. It’s always the chicken hawks who advocate sending other peoples children into what could be an endless conflict. That being said, I don’t agree with the ‘stay completely out it completely either. Believe it or not, I think the administration is handling this fairly judiciously. Giving the Ukrainians enough weaponry to keep the Russians on their heals puts the Russians and Putin in an awful no win position. The Russian people, or more likely, the oligarchs, will turn on him and the world will be a better place. If he encounters no resistance, he will push onward until he does.

Maybe you should be more concerned about our open border than Ukraine’s “sovereignty and territorial integrity”. It’s seems that Democrats are more concerned about Ukraine than the hundred thousand Americans that die ever year from the Chinese made fentanyl coming across our southern border. Not to mention the criminals, cartels and terrorists that they bus and fly all over America.

Every country needs to stay out of this and let these two countries settle this themselves. If the illegal in the WH hadn’t stuck his mouth where it didn’t belong we may not be in this position, but Biden wouldn’t shut up, along with many others. I feel for the civilians in Ukraine and Russia. But, there is something deeper going on between these two countries. NATO has no business in its dispute. Neither Russia nor Ukraine are in NATO. Biden and his band of merry Demoncrats & Rinos escalated this by their constant negative input and are destroying our country in the process. We have warmongers in this administration including the Military. This administration couldn’t even maintain Afghanistan, do you really think they could manage anything?
