New York City’s bail reform initiative continues to foster more violent crime in the city, despite consistently obtuse denials from city leaders that releasing violent criminals back into the streets with no bail might actually contribute to rising crime.
Now more than ever, citizens are forced to protect themselves and their property without the assistance of police forces which are now hamstrung by Democrat policies and understaffing.
Louie Suljovic, owner of Louie’s Pizzeria in Queens along with his father, were both stabbed a collective 10 times as they intervened to rescue a woman from an armed robber outside their pizzeria.
Hailed as heroes in the community, military veteran Louis Suljovic told Fox News Thursday that his father, Cazim, is still hospitalized but his condition appears to be improving.
“Fox and Friends First” co-host Ashley Strohmier recalled that the Suljovic’s kept their business open during the pandemic and made a practice of donating food to local people in need. She wondered rhetorically if Suljovic thought the city was showing the same kind of generosity and goodwill towards business owners like himself who provided so much but are now suffering as a result of policies that favor criminals over victims.
He responded, “You’ve had the change of the bail reform, which has now created a new breed of criminals that know they can do whatever they want and get away with it.”
When asked if he believed a few years ago that his community could be in its current state of despair, he replied, “New York City is very big, but each borough … is [as] much a neighborhood, and everybody really knows each other. If you asked me this three years ago, no, it would have never been like this,” he said. “I’ve never seen such criminal activity and pure violence.”
He added that crime in his community is “completely insane” and that bail reform is “100 percent” responsible for the absolute chaos in his borough and elsewhere.
“When you can be arrested two or three times in literally a 24-hour period and be out and just allowed to do it again, what’s stopping you?” Suljovic asked. “There’s nothing stopping you. It’s basically you’re being rewarded.”
When Cazim Suljovic saw a woman who had just been robbed outside their business, he called for his son and the two sprang into action and gave chase to the suspects. A 61-year-old Asian woman, later identified as Eun Hee Chang, was robbed by two males and one female. She herself was stabbed once and is recovering. When the father and son duo caught up with the suspects, a fight ensued and 68-year-old Cazim was stabbed nine times, while 38-year-old Louie was stabbed once in the back, puncturing a lung, according to a story in TODAY.
“If the communities don’t start taking back their areas, we’re going to lose our city,” the younger Suljovic told the outlet.
“We’ve had enough of the sheer violence on people who are incapable of defending themselves,” he added.
“My father’s character – he taught us to do the best thing for everybody and always try to protect people,” he reiterated to Strohmier Thursday. “We have to do something for other people who are weaker, who can’t do for themselves.”
“That’s what bad people do. They prey on people who are weak; never people who are equal or tougher.”
The younger Suljovic stressed he believes the police are doing the best they can with what they’ve been given, and what they have is far less than they used to, thanks to the backward logic of Democrats who unfortunately keep getting elected to lead.
“It’s not that law enforcement is not doing their job … it’s all the laws that after they do what they’re supposed to, [the laws] fail the community.”
“I think all communities are coming to a point where they have to protect themselves,” he said.
He concluded, “This Manhattan DA said they will not prosecute for so many different things – it just tells you what your local leaders [and] officials, what their mindset is.”
