Biden clutches cheat sheet with prepared press questions and answers, but STILL ‘screwed it up’

The White House continues to be all over the map when it comes to messaging from President Joe Biden who was “a rapid-fire gaffe machine” during his trip to Europe, as one Republican lawmaker characterized his performance.

Chief among Biden’s remarks that the White House had to walk back was a call for regime change in Russia, as the world was assured that the U.S. president wasn’t actually talking about Russian President Vladimir Putin being removed from power. And then Washington Post columnist Max Boot wrote a column insisting Biden’s off-script remark wasn’t a “gaffe,” it was a provocative message directed at Russia akin to past comments from President Ronald Reagan.

On Monday, Biden held a press conference and proceeded to walk all over the White House’s walk back, saying he makes “no apologies” for his remarks — the president even reportedly had a cheat sheet to guide him along.

“It’s more an aspiration than anything,” he said. “He shouldn’t be in power. There’s no  — I mean, people like this shouldn’t be ruling countries, but they do. The fact is they do, but it doesn’t mean I can’t express my outrage about it.”

“I was talking to the Russian people. The last part of the speech was talking to the Russian people, telling them what we thought,” Biden added.

A close-up photo was taken of a card the president held in his hand, titled, “Tough Putin Q&A Talking Points,” which reportedly had prepared responses to questions on the issue of regime change.

The provided answers read:

  • I was expressing the moral outrage I felt towards the actions of this man
  • I was not articulating a change in policy

All of which prompted former Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway to tweet: “[Biden] had a cheat sheet about ‘Tough Putin’ questions so elementary that even he could not screw it up. Then he screwed it up.”

Here’s a quick sampling of a few responses to the story from Twitter:
