A 34-year-old Alabama woman landed herself behind bars on Thursday after injecting herself with an unusual – and highly illegal – painkiller of sorts during the labor of her child earlier this month.

Paramedics arrived on March 5 to Amanda Malpas’ West Mobile home to find her with a heroin needle still lodged in her arm after shooting up in the middle of labor.

“She admitted that when she felt the labor pains and felt the child breaching she did self-administer a large dose of heroin,” Mobile County Sheriff Sgt. Mark Bailey told Fox 10.

Not only did Amanda Malpas admit to shooting up during the delivery of her baby, but she told investigators that she used meth and heroin during her pregnancy too.

The newborn infant was brought to Providence Hospital for treatment due to the infant having difficulty breathing but sadly passed about an hour after arriving in the hospital’s care.

“This is different, usually don’t have a woman give birth in her own residence and inject herself during childbirth with a large dose of heroin intentionally,” Sgt. Bailey said. “In this situation it’s an intentional act, it’s not just a reckless act, but it’s an intentional act.”

The act was followed with the mother being charged with chemical endangerment of a child resulting in death which carries a penalty equivalent to murder. Depending on the outcome of the toxicology report, the charges could be changed to murder.

As she was escorted to jail on crutches a reporter asked her if she felt remorse.

“Of course,” Malpas replied.

The Sheriff’s office said although she has other children, she does not have custody of them.

Many reacted to the story with a simple response outlining their horror in just three simple letters, “WTF.”

Last week another unusual birthing scene unfolded right in the middle of a Portland Oregon sidewalk where a pregnant woman delivered her baby before walking away from the scene and leaving the newborn behind.

“They said the mother, the woman, was stumbling away eastbound on Market with a lot of blood and amniotic fluid all over her,” Police Officer Kirby-Glatkowski said. “It’s a cold day, it wasn’t raining at that moment, but it was raining earlier and the sidewalk at Southwest 13th and Market is no place to deliver a baby alone.”

“Officers then caught up with the mother nearby,” the Portland Police Bureau said. “She was evaluated and placed on a police officer hold to get a mental health evaluation. She and her baby, a girl, were transported to the hospital by ambulance.”
