Peter Schiff received widespread criticism after complaining about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s attire during his virtual address to Congress.
When Zelenskyy addressed a joint session of Congress via the internet, his poignant words and heart-wrenching video of victims of the unprovoked invasion launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin garnered a standing ovation from the assembled legislators.
For economist and commentator Peter Schiff, however, there was a bigger issue worth noting: Zelenskyy wasn’t exactly wearing something from the cover of GQ magazine.
Garbed in his usual t-shirt (but without the fleece jacket,) worn by common Ukrainian soldiers, Zelenskyy stayed true to the image he has established of a warrior-president, in frequent contact with the soldiers defending their nation and overwhelmingly consumed with the awesome responsibility of leading Ukraine through what is arguably its greatest crisis since World War II, where it suffered very heavily under the German occupation.
Yet Schiff tweeted, “I understand times are hard, but doesn’t the President of the #Ukraine own a suit?” … before proceeding to misspell the United States while talking about “disrespect.”
I understand times are hard, but doesn’t the President of the #Ukraine own a suit? I don’t have much respect for current members of the U.S. Congress either, but I still wouldn’t address them wearing a t-shirt. I wouldn’t want to disrespect the institution or the Unites States.

Schiff received an immediate bruising on Twitter after his tone-deaf tweet about Zelenskyy’s clothing garnered nearly universal criticism.
This is one of your worst all time takes. The guy is in the middle of a war zone ducking mortars, Peter, he’s not going to be rolling around his garment rack with him. Also you spelled “United States” wrong

Seriously! The man’s in the midst of an invasion and someone wants to critique his wardrobe? As for disrespect … it’s “United States.”

I just saw pictures of dead adults and children on the streets of Mariupol. They would look more dignified if they were wearing suits. pic.twitter.com/WpXhR1SMcL

Incredibly, as the ratio of criticism to likes continued to climb into the stratosphere, and nearly everyone from both sides of the political aisle dogpiled onto Schiff, he doubled down. Repeatedly:
It’s not about impressing anyone. It’s just common respect. He is representing his nation, and addressing the U.S. Congress. It’s not like his in the battle field personally, and can’t bother to put on a suit. He can just reach into the same closet he keeps his t-shirts.
— Peter Schiff (@PeterSchiff) March 16, 2022
He would not have had to press a suit. I’m sure he had a clean suit hanging in the same closet as his t-shirts. Plus even if there were not suits available, maybe a long-sleeved shirt with a collar.

Then you don’t spend much time on Twitter.

Zelenskyy’s simple garb has become iconic in itself, something that even French President Emmanuel Macron has tried to imitate. For a man with the priorities of Peter Schiff though, there’s no excuse to not be wearing a nice suit when pleading for help in resisting a foreign invasion that is slaughtering your people.
