A San Diego woman was shot dead after stabbing a police officer during the issuance of an eviction notice that proceeded to escalate.

On March 3, deputies from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office (SDSO) arrived at the Aqua Vista condo complex to issue Yan Li, 47, an eviction notice from her fifth-floor residence. NBC 7 reported that Li answered the door with a knife in hand.

Deputy Jason Bunch confirmed the identity of the occupant to be Li before issuing her the notice. When Bunch observed that Li was holding a knife he drew his firearm and ordered her to drop the weapon.

“Put the knife down right now or I’m gonna f*cking shoot you,” Bunch said as he backed away from Li.

Li shouted back at the officer to put his gun down before questioning whether he may be an imposter, “How do I know you’re not an intruder?”

After a tense standoff between the two where Li refused to acknowledge the authority of Bunch, she threw the eviction notice into the hall and slammed the door shut. Bunch proceeded to call for backup, describing Li as “barricaded.”

Officers from the San Diego Police Department’s (SDPD) K9 Unit and Bunch’s supervisor arrived on the scene where they spent approximately 45 minutes communicating with Li through her door in an effort to de-escalate the situation.

During that period, officers reported communication between the condo manager and a maintenance worker who explained that Li had threatened them with a knife the day prior while they were resolving a plumbing issue in her unit.

SPDO explained that this information gave them probable cause to arrest Li for assault with a deadly weapon. Using keys provided by maintenance, the officers entered the dimly lit unit.

While inside, Li allegedly continued to ignore commands from the officers to drop her weapon, leading them to attempt to subdue her using non-lethal bean bag rounds.

Li then charged at the officers who retreated back into the hall, but not before the unnamed K9 officer was stabbed in the upper chest. As he and other officers fell to the ground, SDPD Officer Rogelio Medina, SDSO Sgt. Daniel Nickel and Deputies Javier Medina and David Williams opened fire on Li.

First aid was provided to Li for nearly 10 minutes until paramedics from San Diego Fire-Rescue arrived. They were unable to stabilize Li who was confirmed to have been struck by at least one bullet, and she died on the scene after succumbing to her injuries.

An investigation has been opened by SDPD’s homicide unit to review the details of the shooting and the four officers involved have been assigned administrative duty until they are approved to return to their normal duties. Their service records include a combined 79 years with their departments.

According to SDSO, “The County’s Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board is reviewing the incident and will provide appropriate recommendations. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and United States Attorney’s Office are also monitoring the investigation.”
