Elderly couple praised by US Embassy for confronting armed Russian soldiers

An elderly Ukrainian couple appeared to confront trespassing Russian soldiers in security footage Friday catching the attention of the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv.

In the video, tweeted in Ukrainian before being retweeted in English, three soldiers can be seen approaching a gated courtyard. The soldiers, identified by the embassy as Russian military forces, are heard shouting over the barrier as they work to open it.

After they unlatch the gate, two of the soldiers enter into the courtyard while the third momentarily hangs back. He appears to be getting the attention of a fourth soldier who enters the shot from the far side of the property.

As barking from a dog and shouting can be heard, the footage changes to a different angle where the lead soldiers are seen opening a door of a building within the court. It is then that their attention is drawn to the couple who cautiously approach the trespassing soldiers with shouting.

Yelling and gesturing are exchanged between the two groups as the couple closes the distance on the soldiers. The couple appears to stop no more than a car’s length away from the trespassers as their shouting match continues when one of the soldiers fires a shot from his rifle into the air.

After the fourth soldier enters the courtyard, there appears to be an edit in the footage. The final segment of the security video shows the three original soldiers and the couple closer together and considerably calmer than the initial encounter.

The couple proceeds to escort the soldiers out of the courtyard before closing the gate behind them. This behavior earned the respect of the U.S. Embassy which accompanied the video with a message stating, “#UkrainianHeroes: Today we salute this elderly couple, who stood up to three Russian soldiers.”

Though not clearly stated by the embassy, commenters on the video suggested that this interaction took place in Mykolaiv Oblast approximately 80 miles east of Odesa in southern Ukraine.

The video appears to demonstrate the Ukrainian people’s continuing effort to stand their ground after more than two weeks of military aggression from Russian forces. As Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at the onset, “The war will deprive [security] guarantees from everybody – nobody will have guarantees of security anymore.”

“Who will suffer the most from it?” Zelenskyy asked. “The people. Who doesn’t want it the most? The people! Who can stop it? The people. But are there those people among you? I am sure.”

Those remarks were part of a speech where Zelenskyy offered to arm any Ukrainian who would stand to defend the country, telling his people, “Be ready to support Ukraine in the squares of our cities.”

Despite mixed signals on how much support the U.S. government is willing to provide Ukraine, top officials have continued to recognize the efforts of the people there. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said on March 3, “We are all inspired by what we see from Ukraine. Not just the Ukrainian forces, but the Ukrainian people. The resolve of the people has been amazing.”
