Two Republican senators plan to meet with members of the “People’s Convoy” as the massive armada of trucks and vehicles has reached Washington D.C., the destination of its cross-country journey to protest President Joe Biden’s authoritarian response to the coronavirus pandemic.

“On Tuesday, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) will meet with The People’s Convoy to discuss the harmful effects of President Biden’s vaccine mandates,” according to a press release from Senator Johnson’s office.

The convoy which was given a rousing welcome with a patriotic rally at Maryland’s Hagerstown Speedway over the weekend, has taken to the Capital Beltway, the 64-mile highway which surrounds the city that has come to be referred to as “The Swamp” by millions of Americans who no longer feel that their interests are a priority to their elected representatives; the heavy-handed response to COVID was the final straw for convoy participants.

Convoy organizer Brian Brase, a trucker from Ohio said, “I’m hopeful that we will have successful dialogue with congressmen and women and senators that help get what we’re looking for pushed through in a timely fashion,” the Daily Mail reported. “If they don’t come to the table to meet with us or they ignore us, then every day it will escalate.”

Cruz and Johnson will meet with protesters on a day when congressional staffers have been told to work from home or use public transportation, according to a copy of a letter from House Sergeant at Arms William Walker and House Chief Administrative Officer Catherine Szpindor that was obtained by the Daily Mail.

“If that was not an option, the two House officers gave the unusual option of letting staff get a hotel room paid for by their congressional office, which is funded by taxpayer money, so they can stay close to the Capitol and avoid a commute,” according to the outlet.

“In general, living expenses and commuting expenses, including lodging expenses at a Member’s or employee’s regular duty station, are not reimbursable with official funds, except in extraordinary circumstances,” wrote Walker and Szpindor who said that taxpayers would be footing the bill.

“Considering the current situation, the Committee on House Administration has determined that extraordinary circumstances exist to permit use of official funds to reimburse short-term lodging expenses in the Washington, D.C., area for certain Members and staff,” the Daily Mail reported.

Even though the convoy members have expressed no intention do to anything other than protest peacefully, the Capitol Police, a force that has been politicized and weaponized by Speaker Nancy Pelosi has declared a state of emergency, a reaction that is consistent with the intolerance toward dissent expressed by leaders of so-called western “democracies” like Canada where leftist PM Justin Trudeau ordered a violent, militarized crackdown against truckers protesting his COVID mandates.

Other Republican lawmakers including Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky have previously expressed support for the trucker protests.

“I’m all for it,” he said in February. “Civil disobedience is a time-honored tradition in our country, from slavery to civil rights, you name it. Peaceful protest, clog things up, make people think about the mandates.”
