Former Attorney General William Barr appeared to demonstrate Monday that he is willing to take any position if it helps sell his new book, even consider a vote for President Trump after continually maligning him.

Barr joined NBC’s “Today” to discuss his new memoir with co-host Savannah Guthrie.

“One Damn Thing After Another: Memoirs of an Attorney General,” is scheduled to release on Tuesday and is reported to discuss the 2020 presidential election and Barr’s opinion that it is time for the Republican Party to move on from Trump.

Guthrie brought up Rep. Liz Cheney’s (R-WY) view that Trump is “not fit to serve” at the end of the interview and asked if Barr agreed with that assessment.

“I certainly have made it clear, I don’t think he should be our nominee and I’m gonna support somebody else for the nomination,” Barr said.

Guthrie pressed the issue and asked Barr again if it were down to Trump or any Democrat, would he vote for Trump. He responded, “Because I believe that the greatest threat to the country is the progressive agenda being pushed by the Democratic Party, it’s inconceivable to me that I wouldn’t vote for the Republican nominee.”

The careful word selection from the former attorney general cannot go overlooked in this situation. He neither confirmed nor denied that he would vote for Trump, but he has been more than comfortable with casting aspersions in the former president’s direction.

In another interview for NBC earlier this week, Barr spoke with Lester Holt and laid responsibility for January 6 on Trump “in the broad sense of that word.”

This is a more measured view than his initial response to the events of January 6. Well before details were known, Barr accused Trump of, “Orchestrating a mob to pressure Congress.” Calling it “inexcusable” he went on, “The president’s conduct yesterday was a betrayal of his office and supporters.”

Barr also went on in his discussion with Holt to claim that Trump “never really had a good idea of, you know, the role of the Department of Justice [and] to some extent, you know, the president’s role.”

Guthrie took one more shot at Trump before the interview ended, asking, “So even if he lied about the election and threatened democracy; better than a Democrat?”

As he had agreed with these claims throughout the interview, Barr simply hedged again, “As of now, it’s hard for me to conceive that I wouldn’t vote for the Republican nominee.”

In an excerpt from his book describing Trump’s behavior in the final months of his administration, Barr had some choice words that could just as easily describe himself given his continued self-promotion, “Trump cared only about one thing: himself. Country and principle took second place…in reality, he has no concern with ideology or political principle. His motive is revenge, and is entirely personal.”

Trump torched Barr in a letter to Holt over the weekend, saying the former attorney general was “not one of my better picks.”

“I made many great appointments during my Administration, and we accomplished more than most Administrations could even dream of, but Bill Barr was not one of my better picks,” Trump wrote. “He crumbled under the pressure, and bowed to the Radical Left—And that is not acceptable. Now he is groveling for the media, hoping to gain acceptance that he doesn’t deserve.”
