William Layer: Tucker Carlson, modern Jeremiah?

Op-ed views and opinions expressed are solely those of the author.

Tucker Carlson has come under fire for wanting to keep clear of Ukraine and cover down on our own border. Ad hominem insults are regularly thrown at the man who is one of the few speaking out against the cross-border invasion of the U.S. which is making Jean Raspail’s Camp of the Saints reality, although instead of inundating southern France with the world’s impoverished, it’s southwest America where the hordes are surging.

In the Trump administration, Gen Milley and Gen Kelley’s argument by the assertion that using the military to close the border violated Posse Comitatus was rubbish, the first purpose of the armed forces is the protection of the US, not to “make the world safe for democracy.” Posse Comitatus prohibits using federal troops for law enforcement, not stopping an invasion. If what’s happening on the border now is not an invasion, I don’t what one is. By not securing the border and enforcing immigration law Biden is betraying his oath of office in the long-standing plan of the Democratic Party to destroy the republic by demographics, seizing permanent political power by making Americans a minority in their own land. Carlson recognizes this as few others do. Most of the Republican Party leadership adopts the ostrich posture when even their political survival is at stake. They are petrified at being called “racist” ignoring that unrestricted immigration threatens black Americans too as Cong. Barbara Jordan (D-Texas) warned in her Jordan Commission report.

While the Russian bears watching its fears about NATO embracing Ukraine ought to be considered, recalling how the Kennedy administration reacted to Soviet missiles in Cuba. Unlike the Baltic states, whose roots are in the Hanseatic League, Ukraine has been culturally, and religiously part of Russia; Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev, “the Butcher of Ukraine,” was Ukrainian by birth. The two also have extensive trade ties. Ukraine’s complex history (it was once part of a Polish empire) is unknown to most Americans but in no way does it resemble a Western European democracy. This is not democratic Czechoslovakia facing Nazi Germany. What is to be lost by a neutral Ukraine as Vlad the Impaler has insisted on? The answer is – nothing.

Have those bellowing for military action looked at a map? There is no direct land route, would clearances for American troops be approved, note that Germany refused to allow Estonia to ship armaments to Ukraine. The Europeans are not keen of being involved in this controversy and their military ability is even below questionable.  Following years of disinvestment, the German military is barely functioning whatever the new chancellor may imagine.  NATO sealift into the Black Sea would easily be interdicted and as the U.S. does not have sufficient merchant vessels where would the ships come from?  Would any shipping company want to risk losing its vessels to Russian missiles? Not likely.  In Desert Storm Korea refused to lease vessels to the US, why does anyone think this would be any different?

Do the more bellicose of Carlson’s critics have any understanding of what war with the Russians could involve? We are not dealing with third rate Arab armies, 12th Century Bedouin with a Rolex and an AK-47.  Russia’s modernized troops are equipped, trained, and determined. War is hard, dirty, and dangerous, it is not a video game. The American campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan violated every Clausewitzian principle of war.  How has that turned out?

While the war hawks fret about Ukraine’s borders ours are evaporating. Have they ever contemplated that while defending Ukraine they are losing the U.S.? Do they even care? Tucker Carlson already knows the answer.
