AOC heading to Texas to campaign against Dem colleague after scolding her party for ‘mistake’

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) took her progressive policies on the road to rally in Texas leading up to the Democratic primary

She announced the rally on Twitter asking her followers, “Texans, are you ready?”

“We’re coming in for a major DOUBLE-RALLY next Saturday, Feb 12th to send @GregCasar + @JCisnerosTX to Congress and support community organizing across the state,” Ocasio-Cortez added.

In her official endorsement for Greg Casar last week, Ocasio-Cortez said, “Because of his roots as a labor organizer, I know Greg and I will work together to organize year-round and deliver on Medicare for All, good jobs, and climate justice.  I’m proud to support his campaign and will be doing everything I can to help him win this primary on March 1.”

Casar is running against three other candidates in the newly redrawn 35th Congressional District and said, “I’m honored to have earned the endorsement of Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, who boldly fights for working families every single day.  I look forward to working with her to deliver for TX-35 residents.”

Incumbent Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) has announced that he will be running again, but in District 37.

This contrasts the endorsement for Jessica Cisneros who is attempting for a second time to unseat incumbent Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) in the 28th Congressional District.

In their 2020 primary contest, Cuellar won the nomination over Cisneros by four points.  However, with only weeks remaining before the primary and early voting beginning on February 14, Cuellar has found himself in the middle of a controversy.

In late January, the FBI conducted a raid of Cuellar’s home and office in South Texas.  The congressman has not been charged with a crime and, at the time, the FBI has not disclosed any details on the scope of its investigation.

Of the FBI investigation, Cisneros said, “For South Texans… [it] is alarming and yet there were already serious concerns about the Congressman’s long history of corruption and close ties with his corporate donors over the voters of this district.”

As vice chairman of the House Appropriations Homeland Security Committee, Cuellar has vocally advocated against President Biden’s handling of the border crisis and immigration.  He also finds himself in the moderate camp of the Democrat Party holding some conservative views including opposition to abortion.

Cuellar’s moderate stances have made him a target, earning Cisneros endorsements from organizations like EMILY’s List, NARAL Pro-Choice America, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, and Progressive Democrats of America.  In addition to Ocasio-Cortez, Cisneros has also received a personal endorsement from U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA).

Ocasio-Cortez has been outspoken against her party after not being included on the campaign trail in Virginia.

“Before the Virginia elections, it was very clear that our help and our participation was not wanted or asked for… I think it was a mistake,” Ocasio-Cortez said following Republican Glenn Youngkin’s victory in November.

She also said that though she had not been asked to campaign, the party still blamed her progressive ilk for the Democrat losses.

Democrats having such national figures and organizations flooding the state of Texas leading up to the primary presents a far different tactic to the Republican National Committee which has focused on opening local staffed community outreach centers.

While fans of Ocasio-Cortez gushed over her latest moves, many Twitter users questioned why the socialist Democrat should have any input in elections miles from her own New York district.
