Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby, who once received gushing praise and support from Vice President Kamala Harris, has been indicted on federal charges of perjury and filing false mortgage applications in connection to two Florida vacation homes.
“When we march and we shout about what we need to do to reform the criminal justice system, we better understand that we gotta march and shout with our paychecks – and all of the work that we can do to actually make sure that somebody like Marilyn Mosby gets reelected into that office, to not only get convictions but have convictions,” Harris proclaimed at a fundraiser in Los Angeles in 2017.
“There are a lot of people who are highly critical of her,” Harris, who was a U.S. senator at the time, added, “because she heard the voices of the people and said, ‘Even if I can’t win I’m going to do the right thing.’ It’s going to be rough. It’s going to be tough. … She cannot fail and I know she will not fail.”
“On a personal note, she has inspired black women like me to run for office,” the high-profile liberal prosecutor stated. “There would be no Marilyn Mosby without Kamala Harris. When I won state’s attorney, Kamala was my inspiration.”

Harris is reportedly not connected to the current charges against Mosby.
Mosby, 41, was elected on the Democratic ticket in 2015. The indictment contends that she basically lied twice, claiming that she suffered a work-related financial hardship from COVID so she could request early withdrawals totaling $90,000 from her city employee retirement account.
The indictment further states that, in both instances, Mosby fraudulently cited a federal CARES Act provision that allowed for emergency distributions of up to $100,000 from her retirement plan in the event of a furlough, layoff, quarantine, reduced work hours, lack of childcare, or impact on a person’s business caused by COVID.
Prosecutors allege that she used $36,000 in May 2020 and $45,000 in December that same year as down payments on vacation homes in Kissimmee and Long Boat Key, Florida.
She received the funds while she was earning a gross salary of almost $248,000.
She is also being charged with two counts of making false statements on mortgage applications where she applied to get over $900,000 in loans to purchase the two Florida properties.

Specifically, the indictment contends that Mosby failed to disclose that she and her husband were delinquent in federal tax payments resulting in a $45,000 tax lien that was filed against them by the Internal Revenue Service in 2020.
Mosby allegedly stated that she would be the primary resident of one of the homes for at least a year so she could receive a lower mortgage rate. But she had already entered an agreement with a vacation home management company to rent out the house the week before, according to the indictment.
She was part of a Democratic movement of “progressive prosecutors” who ran for office and promised to address systemic inequities in the U.S. criminal justice system. Mosby’s name was splattered across national headlines in 2015 when she charged six officers in the police custody death of Freddie Gray, who was a young black man.
Gray suffered a fatal spinal injury while he was being transported in the back of a police van by the officers. His death led to riots that took place the day of his funeral. None of the six officers that were charged with his death were convicted.
If Mosby is convicted, she could serve up to 70 years in prison, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Maryland.
An attorney for Mosby maintained her innocence regarding Thursday’s allegations.
“Marilyn Mosby is innocent, has been innocent, and we look forward to defending her in the court of law and presenting evidence of her innocence to a jury of her peers,” attorney A. Scott Bolden told FOX 45 in Baltimore in an interview. “We will fight these charges vigorously, and I remain confident that once all the evidence is presented, that she will prevail against these bogus charges — charges that are rooted in personal, political, and racial animus five months from her election.”

The controversial prosecutor is running for re-election in June for a third term as Baltimore’s state attorney. She has denied any wrongdoing in previous statements concerning the investigation.
She is married to Baltimore City Council President Nick Mosby.
