Former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows is claiming in his new book “The Chief’s Chief” that when he heard Fox News had called Arizona early on for Joe Biden during the 2020 presidential election, he got so angry that he was surprised he didn’t break his iPhone over the development.
After hearing about Arizona, Meadows reportedly rage-dialed Fox News Washington managing editor Bill Sammon to dress him down over the Arizona call. Meadows described the determination as “mathematically impossible,” according to Business Insider.
“I walked back down to the Map Room, where our analysts were reporting good news from social media. The Twitter traffic was all trending in the right direction,” Meadows noted.
“Then, out of nowhere, I heard a loud series of screams and expletives from the next room. Fox News had called Arizona for Joe Biden,” he recalled in his book.
“Not only was this infuriating, but it was also mathematically impossible to determine at this early hour. With the information that Fox News had at the time, they could not possibly have been able to legitimately make the call that they did,” he contended.

The former chief of staff also excoriated the network in his book, declaring that there was a “liberal contingent” within Fox News that was attempting to “sabotage” then-President Trump.
“My worst fears — that there was a liberal contingent within the network trying to sabotage President Trump in the name of objectivity — had been realized. I dialed Bill Sammon once again, tapping the numbers with such force that I’m surprised I didn’t crack the screen of my iPhone,” he asserted in his book.
Meadows informed Sammon, “There is no information that you could have at this time that would make this call possible.” He told Sammon that it wasn’t Fox News’ place to placate political figures in the White House.
Sammon retired from Fox News in January after the election blowup.
Following the Arizona debacle, the network unbelievably announced in October that Arnon Mishkin, the director of the Fox News decision desk who called Arizona for Biden and was at the center of the controversy, will return for the 2022 and 2024 elections. This could potentially alienate the network’s audience from even bothering to tune in as there no longer remains any trust in Mishkin’s objectivity on elections among conservatives.
There was widespread outrage at the time over the impossibly early call for Arizona by Fox News. They proceeded to double down on the call and refused to rescind it, infuriating Trump supporters across the nation.
Former President Trump slammed the move by Fox News. He tweeted at one point that the network “forgot the Golden Goose,” according to The Hill.
The release of Meadows’ book last week comes as a House select committee is investigating the Jan. 6 protest. Meadows has been held in contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate with the demands of the committee and is awaiting a decision from the Department of Justice on the matter.
