The progressive left has begun to shun the word “woke” and blames conservatives for its demise, with comedian Greg Gutfeld expertly explaining their opposition to the term.

At the same time, the Fox News host noted, “You can’t really wake the woke.”

Appearing as a co-host on Fox News’ “The Five” last week, Gutfeld mocked Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the extreme left for their hypocrisy after the New York Democrat took to social media to whine about conservatives flipping the term that indicates a hyper-awareness of so-called systemic injustices from a positive connotation to a negative one.

“It’s not fair,” Gutfeld began. “They get to use derogatory euphemisms about us. All we did is point a spotlight at it.”

“Nobody has to exaggerate any of this stuff. The headlines, like when you get a woke headline where they say they’re banning a word or a costume, you always think that it’s like some kind of like red meat clickbait, and then you read it and go, no, it’s for real,” the comedian explained.

The term was previously used in a positive light by the left, which David Marcus explained to Fox News Digital, “You go back 12, 13 years … it was definitely something that people on the left would use in an approving way.”

But last week Ocasio-Cortez tweeted a complaint about the alleged misuse of the word calling it “a term pundits are now using as a derogatory euphemism for civil rights & justice.”

Gutfeld believes Ocasio-Cortez might want to pay more attention to the reasons the left is shying away from the term.

“AOC should listen, it’s not a war, it’s an intervention. You have decent people in the Democrat Party trying to reason with the woke contingent out of this very addictive filter of race and oppression politics,” the 57-year-old television host explained. “It masquerades as some kind of thoughtful scholarship.”

Democrat strategist James Carville even blasted his own party for its “stupid wokeness” in an interview on PBS Newshour after the recent election, citing the progressive policies as having had a “suppressive effect across the country on Democrats.”

“Some of these people need to go to a woke detox center or something,” Carville said.

But Ocasio-Cortez doesn’t think her party is woke enough, blaming the recent sweeping conservative victories on Democrats being too moderate and “trying to run a fully 100% super moderated campaign,” and lamenting that the progressives, “weren’t really even invited to contribute” in the Virginia race.

NPR has been calling for an end to the term since at least 2018 when an opinion piece urged readers to leave the term behind in 2018 calling it “dead,” and explaining that “the muddling of the definition of woke is really what killed it.”

“Words that begin with a very specific meaning, used by a very specific group of people, over time become shorthand for our politics, and eventually move from shorthand to linguistic weapon. Or in the case of woke, a linguistic eye-roll,” it read.

Gutfeld explained the dishonesty of the linguistic battle noting that when there is a disagreement, the left immediately proclaims racism as the root cause.

“But the problem with trying to wake up the woke because is you can’t. Because the woke believes by definition, you’re unconscious, you’re guilty of unconscious racism,” he said. “I’m awake, how dare you say I’m not awake.”

“So you really can’t wake the woke,” Gutfield added.
