DeSantis to propose $5K bonus to lure police officers to Florida from states with vaccine mandates

Are you a law enforcement officer looking to move? Turns out a plan may be in the works to pay you to do so, in fact.

On Sunday Morning Futures, hosted by Maria Bartiromo, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is proposing to do exactly that. He outlined on the show a plan in the works to give police officers fleeing liberal cities money to entice them to make the trek to Florida.

DeSantis spoke about the controversial vaccine mandate imposed by the administration of President Joe Biden, and castigated the way it has led to job losses in critical sectors such as health care, police, and even military. The Republican governor tried to draw a contrast between himself and the way Democratic leaders have treated these essential workers:

“Maria these people we’ve been hailing as heroes, the nurses we’ve said, are heroes. This whole time, they’ve been working day in and day out, they never, they couldn’t do their job on Zoom – they had to be there! And they did it, they did it with honor and integrity. And now, you have people, who wanna kick them out of their job, over a shot, which is basically a personal decision.”

DeSantis also took the opportunity to criticize the Biden administration’s mandate and question its basic legality, as well as question its impact on the very Americans it is allegedly trying to help.

“What Biden’s doing is unconstitutional. He does not have the authority to do this,” he said. “But what it will do on a practical level, in addition to it being unconstitutional, in addition to taking away people’s personal choices, is it will wreak havoc in the economy. Because even if a small percentage of these folks end up losing their jobs or voluntarily walking away. You’re going to have huge disruptions.”

In Florida, however, DeSantis made it clear he wants to take the opposite approach, and is even willing to offer financial incentives to law enforcement officers who decide to pack up and move to the Sunshine State.

“In Florida, our policy is very clear. We’re going to have a special session and say nobody should lose their job based off these injections. It’s a choice you should make but we want to make sure we’re protecting your jobs and your livelihoods,” he said, adding, “In the next legislative session I’m going to hopefully sign legislation that gives a $5,000 bonus to any out-of-state law enforcement who relocates to Florida.”

The proposal appears to be taking direct aim at both Biden and blue states, and in particular the biggest, most liberal cities within those blue states, such as Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, etc. Indiana has already began actively recruiting disillusioned cops from Chicago, Illinois. It is also not the first time that DeSantis has accused Biden of trying to ruin the economy with vaccine mandates, either.

Since the policy has not yet passed the Florida legislature and been approved into law, there is, for now, only speculation as to what the impact of this proposal will be, and whether it will lead to an exodus of police to Florida.
