Self-identified “journalist” Carl Bernstein recently suggested on CNN that Trump supporters who believe former President Donald Trump’s claims about the 2020 presidential election need to be scrutinized, perhaps even investigated.

Speaking with CNN host Anderson Cooper on the 7th about the former president’s continued efforts to challenge the official results of the 2020 election, Bernstein portrayed the efforts as a cult-like “coup” led by a mentally disturbed man.

“Let’s say that perhaps we have a sociopath or a psychopath who has been the president of the United States and seeks perhaps to be the next president of the United States and has ignited this movement,” he said.

He was likely referring to Trump.

“We have never had a period in our history, when 40 to 45 percent of the people in our country have said, oh, yes, I’ll go along with this psychopath, I’ll go along with this sociopath,” he added, this time referring to Trump supporters.

“We need to be looking at these facts as well as the coup, and what this individual did. We need to look at why are people, so many of our people following this sociopathic undermining of our democracy. It’s extraordinary.”

What he said wasn’t entirely true. Setting aside the “sociopath”/”psychopath” label, a Gallup poll conducted after the contentious 2000 election found that only 48 percent of Americans felt that then-President George W. Bush had won “fair and square.”

Around 33 percent of Americans were convinced he’d won on a technicality, and 17 percent thought he’d outright stolen the election.

Similarly, a Monmouth University poll published in June found that 32 percent of Americans believe current President Joe Biden won because of voter fraud.

Though in fairness to Bernstein, then failed-presidential nominee Al Gore did quickly accept defeat, whereas Trump has kept his fight alive.

Bernstein’s jarring remarks came during a wider discussion about a just-released report from Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee accusing the former president of having tried to cajole the Department of Justice into overturning the official results of the 2020 presidential election.

Led by committee ranking member Sen. Chuck Grassley, Republicans released their own rebuttal report claiming that Trump had done no wrong.

“The available evidence shows that President Trump did what we’d expect a president to do on an issue of this importance: he listened to his senior advisors and followed their advice and recommendations,” Grassley said in a statement at the time.

“Contrast that with President Biden’s actions on Afghanistan. Biden ignored the advice of his generals and went ahead with a reckless and disaster-filled withdrawal.”

Bernstein expressed grave anger at Grassley for preparing a rebuttal report.

“Chuck Grassley was once a really honorable man with a terrific record, serving his party. … And it is a long time ago, because what he is doing is a disgrace, as his colleagues are doing. What the Republican Party is doing today is unprecedented in our history, going along with subversion of the Constitution of the United States,” he complained to Cooper.

“This is not about a set of unknown facts. It’s very clear to these people in the Republican Party what happened. They want to win and prevail in this civil war, at any cost. And the cost to the country is something that we have not seen in this nation since 1860 to 1865.”

Despite their frequent accusations that the right is full of conspiracy theorizing lunatics, mainstream members of the left have a bizarre habit of claiming that America is in a “civil war” just because Trump is challenging the results of the 2020 election.

As for the devastating Black Lives Matter and Antifa riots that devastated the country in 2020, that was just people “seeking justice,” according to these same left-wing conspiracy theorists.

Continuing his remarks, the “journalist” then doubled down on this idea that Trump supporters need to be scrutinized.

“That’s the only period in our history we can look at as to when the forces of undemocratic to say the least, but when the forces gathered to undermine our unity as a country, and what we stand for and who we are,” Bernstein said.

“We are in a similar period right now, in which — and that’s what we need to be covering as well in the media, what is going on in the country that is allowing this to happen? We need to find out what’s on people’s minds if they are willing to go along with this.”

What’s perhaps on “people’s minds” is disgust at the never-ending lies they hear about themselves and about their ideological opponents.

In a piece for The Daily Beast published Sunday, conservative commentator Matt Lewis noted how for years the media have been lying to hurt Republicans and help Democrats.

One of their most devastating lies occurred during the 2012 presidential election.

He noted that during a presidential debate, “Mitt Romney was cut off in a crucial debate moment by CNN moderator Candy Crowley, who ‘fact-checked’ Romney when he said that Obama suggested for weeks after the attack that it was a spontaneous demonstration rather than a planned act of terror.”

Except that it was learned after the election that Romney had been 100 percent right.

Sometime prior to the debate, then-President Barack Obama had in an interview with CBS News indeed blamed the attack on a spontaneous demonstration.

But for clear-cut political reasons, the left-wing network chose to never air the part of the interview in which Obama had made these remarks.

And even after Romney was falsely fact-checked, CBS News remained silent.

“The debate over Obama’s characterization of the Benghazi attack dominated multiple news cycles, but rather than airing footage that would have provided additional context for the American people (not to mention, driven ratings and clicks), CBS chose to sit on it,” according to Lewis.

In a world with so much dishonesty, is it really that surprising that Trump supporters remain suspicious of the official results of the 2020 presidential election?
