Doctor says Newsom’s vaccine mandate for kids was made ‘flippantly with a disregard for the evidence’

Fresh off his recall election victory, California’s Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom gave the state a quick reminder of the consequences of not replacing him, enacting a vaccine mandate for eligible children over 12 years old in order to attend school — the first in the nation.

“The state already requires that students are vaccinated against viruses that cause measles, mumps, and rubella – there’s no reason why we wouldn’t do the same for COVID-19. Today’s measure, just like our first-in-the-nation school masking and staff vaccination requirements, is about protecting our children and school staff, and keeping them in the classroom,” Newsom said. “Vaccines work. It’s why California leads the country in preventing school closures and has the lowest case rates. We encourage other states to follow our lead to keep our kids safe and prevent the spread of COVID-19.”

The problem with that statement is that it’s not evidence-based, and Los Angeles physician Dr. Houman Hemmati pointed that out during an appearance Monday on “Fox & Friends First,” while asking why isn’t there a testing alternative to this mandate?

“The decision that the governor made is one that’s really based on his personal beliefs that’s based in politics,” Hemmati explained. “As a physician, the one thing that I’m taught, the one thing that we should all practice is evidence-based medicine, and the evidence-based decisions need to not just extend to the doctor-patient relationship, but also to policies that are made by politicians and public health boards.”

“When those aren’t done, we just have decisions that are made kind of flippantly with a disregard for the evidence that exists out there.”

For the record, Dr. Anthony Fauci appeared Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” to declare that he believes Newsom practiced “sound judgment” by issuing a vaccine mandate for children.

Fox News co-host Todd Piro suggested that if preventing death in kids is the ultimate goal, “prolific killers like suicide and drug overdose” should be where the focus is.

“When you look at children, only around 35 children in all of California have died since the pandemic began,” Dr. Hemmati replied. “Now that’s tragic, we don’t want to see even a single child die. But when you look at the numbers of deaths of children that have occurred as a result of other causes, you have many causes such as motor vehicle accidents, accidental injuries from bicycle accidents, drownings, poisonings, suicide, drug overdoses, homicides by gunshots, all exceeding this by an order of magnitude or greater.”

“When you think about that, if schools really were a place where paternalistic medicine were to be practiced, where you would have a center of safety and health for children, rather than just a center of education, wouldn’t you focus on the true killers of kids that we mentioned,” he continued. “Wouldn’t we be questioning regarding suicidality, wouldn’t we be doing drug tests, wouldn’t we be asking about seat belt use, car seat use, bike helmet use, whether that’s a locked gun at home, whether there’s a gate on the pool, et cetera. But we’re not. We’re focused on something that has killed so few children, albeit tragically, that we’re ignoring everything else. If they’re going to turn public schools into health centers, they need to really be asking this question, are they doing the right things and if they aren’t, then we should have that conversation.”
