One grieving North Carolina family was horrified earlier this month when they reportedly found a stranger’s body inside their mother’s casket, in a startling and upsetting error by the funeral home.
Jennifer Taylor and Jennetta Archer, sisters, found the body of another woman wearing their mother’s clothing inside the casket at Hunter’s Funeral Home in Ahoskie, North Carolina on September 7, the day of the viewing.
To make matters worse, the funeral home, about 120 miles northeast of Raleigh, allegedly disregarded the sisters’ concerns and denied that the person in the casket was someone else, according to WAVY-TV.
“We just couldn’t understand how this could happen,” said Jennifer Taylor.
“There’s no similarity in the person. Their size was way off. When the first person had the clothing on, she was swimming in the clothes because she was so small compared to my mother,” Jennetta Archer explained to the local outlet.
Hunter’s Funeral Home denied any possibility of mistake when approached by the sisters, undoubtedly on one of the worst days of their lives, until their mother, Mary Archer’s body was located in the embalming room.
“No one addressed it immediately. It would have been a different situation if they had just come up front and addressed it immediately to show that yes, they did, they made an error,” Archer said.
It remains unclear how such a mistake occurred.
“What do you do to prevent something like that from happening? Don’t they have a chart per person and treat them like a customer or a patient or whatever you want to refer to them as so that you don’t have them mixed up?” Archer suggested.
“For this to play out like that, it’s just embarrassing,” Taylor added.
The head embalmer at Hunter’s Funeral Home confirmed the mix-up saying it was an honest mistake and claimed to have apologized to the family, WAVY reported.
The embalmer noted that this had never happened to him in more than 40 years of embalming. He claims that he tried contacting the sisters to explain the incident, but the sisters say they never got a call and just want their questions answered.
Fox News also reached out to the funeral home but reported that they did not immediately respond to an after-hours email.
Twitter users were in disbelief at the funeral home’s insensitivity and could not wrap their minds around how a mistake of that gravity occurred in the first place:
This is beyond disturbing! https://t.co/zpDbwDIfha
