As the Biden presidency heads towards its ninth month, some commentators are noting that his agenda, and the Democrats’, might be in danger of being seriously derailed.
Things are bad when you’re a Democratic president yet not even NBC has your back. The week has been so rough for President Biden that even NBC’s political moderator Chuck Todd is now saying he has a “credibility crisis on his hands,” and added that “all of these problems, in some ways, showed up, after he said, something, basically the opposite.”
Todd listed a litany of issues where Biden has come out looking either uninterested and uninvolved or outright incompetent. From the disastrous pullout in Afghanistan, that Biden promised “wouldn’t look like Saigon,” to the Covid-19 vaccine booster shots that were promised in 8 months, then 5 months, and now which may not even be available to anyone under 65 at this point.
Furthermore, as Todd pointed out, the situation on the border has become many times worse than it has been in many years.
Even if it’s argued that the situation isn’t solely Biden’s fault, as it’s been building for years, there is a notable absence of any sort of leadership, such as “border czar,” Vice President Kamala Harris as MSNBC’s Stephanie Rhule noted.
All this and more were discussed by Dana Perino, who went on Fox News Channel’s “The Five” to talk about some of the missed opportunities and the mounting crisis of confidence in the Biden administration, along with the drama that plagues what he promised would be a calm, tranquil presidency:
“The chaos of Biden is what he campaigned against. He was supposed to be the steady hand on the wheel. He was going to be boring, especially on foreign policy. Remember he gave a speech on February 4th, America is back? Now we have an absolute mess in Afghanistan. The border. And our oldest ally France is calling us names. Things are not going well.”
As Perino pointed out, these issues piling up on each other have kept the Democrats largely on the defensive, unable to control the narrative and put a full-court press on the Republicans:
“… so now he’s going to try to give a climate speech tomorrow. All these other things are happening. Biden’s political erosion preventing Democrats from taking it to Republicans on the debt ceiling or Democrats to get any traction on its legislative agenda which is completely falling apart before our eyes.”
Other key Biden initiatives appear to be on the rocks as well. With key swing vote Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) saying he wants to put a “pause” on the $3.5 trillion spending bill advertised as “infrastructure stimulus,” the legislation Biden clearly intended to be his signature piece is in doubt as Democrats lose momentum.
As Biden heads to the United Nations today, it remains to be seen if his speech there on climate change will even attract notice, let alone be taken seriously.
