Initial Wuhan lab investigation reveals game-changing new evidence of timeline and cover-up

House Foreign Affairs Committee Republicans are preparing to release a damning report pointing a finger directly at the Chinese Wuhan Lab for the leak of the coronavirus as well as providing evidence of genetic modification and a cover-up of the entire mess.

According to Fox News, the report contends that the leak occurred in the fall of 2019. It concluded that “the preponderance of evidence suggests SARS-CoV-2 was accidentally released from a Wuhan Institute of Virology laboratory sometime prior to September 12, 2019,” and “the virus, or the viral sequence that was genetically manipulated, was likely collected in a cave in Yunnan province, PRC, between 2012 and 2015.” It also goes on to say Wuhan lab researchers, CCP officials, and “potentially American citizens” all “directly engaged in efforts to obfuscate information related to the origins of the virus and to suppress public debate of a possible lab leak.”

Months before the leak occurred, the lab reportedly requested bids for major renovations to air safety and waste treatment systems within the facility. The lab had been in operation for less than 2 years.

“Such a significant renovation so soon after the facility began operation appears unusual,” concluded the report. The renovations for air disinfection, hazardous waste, and central air conditioning systems “all raise questions about how well these systems were functioning in the months prior to the outbreak of COVID-19.”

Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX), the top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee who led the GOP’s China Task Force, will include this information as an addendum to their September report on the alleged cover-up.

The report not only provides evidence that the lab is the source of the outbreak, it also goes into the steps that researchers at the lab and Peter Daszak of EcoHealth Alliance took to cover all of it up. It also examines scientific papers written by researchers at the lab concerning dangerous genetic modification research on coronaviruses at unsafe biosafety levels. The report details that the researchers had the ability as early as 2016 to modify the coronaviruses and leave no trace that they had done so.

McCaul claims that it is the right time to “completely dismiss” the hypothesis that the virus came from the Wuhan wet market.

“We know gain-of-function research was happening at the WIV and we know it was being done in unsafe conditions. We also now know the head of the Chinese CDC and the director of the WIV’s Biosafety Level-4 lab publicly expressed concerns about safety at PRC labs in the summer of 2019. It is our belief the virus leaked sometime in late August or early September 2019. When they realized what happened, Chinese Communist Party officials and scientists at the WIV began frantically covering up the leak, including taking their virus database offline in the middle of the night and requesting more than $1 million for additional security,” McCaul stated.

“But their cover-up was too late — the virus was already spreading throughout the megacity of Wuhan. Within a month, satellite images show a significant uptick in the number of people at hospitals around the WIV with symptoms similar to COVID-19. At the same time, athletes at the Military World Games became sick with symptoms similar to COVID-19. Some of them carried the virus back to their home countries — creating one of the earliest super spreader events in the world,” he added.

The report surmises that the removal of the virus and the sample database in September of 2019 indicates that the coronavirus leaked from the lab. That database ostensibly contained “more than 22,000 entries consisting of sample and pathogen data collected from bats and mice.” There has been “no consistent answer” as to why it has not been put back online.

Also noted is the very real possibility that one or more researchers were infected with the virus after collecting it from a cave or while manipulating it in the lab. That infection could have provided a “vector for the virus to spread.”

Republicans assert that the report “lays out ample evidence that researchers at the WIV, in conjunction with U.S. scientists and funded by both the PRC government and the U.S. government, were conducting gain-of-function research on coronaviruses at the WIV.” They conclude that there is “ample proof that the virus could have been genetically manipulated.”

The report also says that there is more than sufficient evidence that the Chinese government, lab researchers, and other interested parties actively worked to discredit the notion that the virus was leaked from the lab or may have been human-made.

Worse yet, the report points out the “installation of a People’s Liberation Army’s bioweapons expert as the head of the WIV’s’ Biosafety Level 4 lab” in late 2019 instead of January 2020 as was previously reported.

Citing testimony from “a former senior U.S. official,” the report states that Major General Chen Wei, an expert in biology and chemical weapon defenses, took control of the Wuhan Institute’s biosafety level-4 lab in late 2019. That timing indicates that the Chinese Communist Party “was concerned about the activity happening there as news of the virus was spreading,” according to the report. “If she took control in 2019, it would mean the CCP knew about the virus earlier, and that the outbreak began earlier.”
