‘Happy Birthday, America, whatever’s left of ya’: Toby Keith’s provocative new patriotic song

Country music star Toby Keith has released a new single celebrating the birth of America ahead of Independence Day to mark its 245th birthday, though the song will also provoke some thought about where the country is today and where it could be headed.

The song, “Happy Birthday, America,” is not Keith’s first patriotic offering: Earlier releases include the smash, “American Soldier,” along with “American Ride,” “Made In America,” and “Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue (Angry American).”

In an interview Friday with “Fox & Friends,” Keith debuted his new single and said he was inspired to write the song last summer during a massive boat parade and fireworks display amid the then-worsening COVID-19 pandemic.

“All the boats had radios synced to the same radio station” which played music to correlate with the display, said the award-winning musician. “So you could hear the same thing all the way across the lake.”

He then said one of his tunes, ‘Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue,’ began to play. “Everybody was honking their horns, screaming and singing…I was like, ‘wow.’ It was in the middle of last summer and this country felt like a dumpster fire about then.

“So I said, ‘Happy Birthday, America, whatever’s left of ya,'” he continued, adding that he wrote the song a few days later.

“I live in the heartland, and it just feels like everybody you talk to has got the same worries,” Keith continued. “Feels like democracy’s in trouble and…it just feels like the politicians on both sides aren’t gettin’ the job done.”

Here are the lyrics:

Happy birthday, America

It’s the Fourth of July

I’ll get to wake up in your freedom

But sometimes I wonder why

Seems like everybody’s pissin’

On the red, white, and blue

Happy Birthday, America

Whatever’s left of you.

You were the darlin’ when you saved the world, WWI and II

France would just be part of Germany now if it hadn’t been for you

Now your children wanna turn you into something other than yourself

They burn your flag in their city streets more than anybody else.

Happy birthday, America

It’s the Fourth of July

I’ll get to wake up in your freedom

But sometimes I wonder why

Seems like everybody’s pissin’

On the red, white, and blue

Happy Birthday, America

Whatever’s left of you.

Who they gonna count on when you’re not there to take their call

Will the world keep right on spinnin’ without the greatest of ’em all

Without the helping hand of God your days are numbered my old friend

We’re sure gonna miss you girl, you were the best that’s ever been.

Happy birthday, America.

All the broken down cities by the left’s design

And the right can’t seem to get it right most of the time.

Every time I go to town and vote I just come home with the blues

The lesser of two evils is all we ever get to choose.

Happy birthday, America

It’s the Fourth of July

I’ll get to wake up in your freedom

But sometimes I wonder why

Seems like everybody’s pissin’

On the red, white, and blue

Happy Birthday, America

Whatever’s left of you.

Happy Birthday, America…
