Conservative Matt Walsh raises $100k to fix home of AOC’s grandma, shaming Tesla-driving lawmaker

Conservative commentator and writer Matt Walsh has raised over $100,000 for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s grandmother in Puerto Rico after the New York Democrat blamed former President Trump for damage to her home following hurricane Maria in 2017.

Ocasio-Cortez tweeted out on Tuesday about her grandmother and her damaged home: “Just over a week ago, my abuela fell ill. I went to Puerto Rico to see her- my 1st time in a year+ bc of COVID. This is her home,” Ocasio-Cortez declared while showing pictures of buckets on the floor to catch water leaking from the roof and the damaged ceiling. “Hurricane María relief hasn’t arrived. Trump blocked relief $ for PR. People are being forced to flee ancestral homes, & developers are taking them.”

The Squad member added, “We immediately got to work reaching out to community advocates and leaders and following the money. What’s happening to Puerto Ricans is systemic. Much of it can be traced to La Junta, aka the Wall Street-connected fiscal control board that the US gave power to over the island.”

The congresswoman proceeded to blame Trump’s administration for overseeing “millions in public $” that was given to “unqualified donor pals” and of implementing “extremely difficult eligibility rules for Puerto Ricans, which allowed mass rejections of recovery fund applications.”

“I want to be clear – while Trump admin had a major role, it wasn’t just them,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “La Junta, local policies, etc were all on the same page: policies that pushed out local families. To turn this around, we need audits & get recovery relief to people ASAP, without the onerous strings. And for the record – my abuela is doing okay. It’s not about us, but about what’s happening to Puerto Rican’s across the island. She had a place to go to and be cared for – what about the thousands of people who don’t?”

She received widespread criticism on social media, not only for blaming Trump but for not helping her grandmother.

Walsh chastized Ocasio-Cortez over not helping her grandmother when she has the means to do so: “Shameful that you live in luxury while allowing your own grandmother to suffer in these squalid conditions.”

She clapped back at the conservative pundit: “You don’t even have a concept for the role that 1st-gen, first-born daughters play in their families. My abuela is okay. But instead of only caring for mine & letting others suffer, I’m calling attention to the systemic injustices you seem totally fine w/ in having a US colony.”

Walsh replied: “You used your grandmother’s suffering to score political points. You’re the one who publicized this. So I am entitled now to ask why you haven’t bothered to fix your grandmother’s collapsing roof or buy her some new furniture? Why are you waiting for the government to do it?”

Walsh, who is a staunch and vocal critic of Democrats and their progressive policies, decided to take the issue to a new level a started a GoFundMe account for the congresswoman’s grandmother and titled it: “Save AOC’s Abuela’s Ancestral Home.”

“One cannot be certain of the cost to repair grandma’s house, but surely most of the work could be completed for the price of AOC’s shiny Tesla Model 3,” Walsh commented in the campaign description. “Sadly, virtue-signaling isn’t going to fix abuela’s roof. So we are.”

The Daily Wire writer implored his followers to give to the cause: “Let’s all kick in to help save AOC’s abuela’s ancestral home. Any amount is appreciated, but the cost of a monthly lease payment on that Tesla is around $499… All proceeds will be donated to abuela, if she will accept them.”

In less than 12 hours, the campaign raised $104,153. It is no longer taking donations since it more than met its goal of $48,990. Walsh himself started the drive by chipping in $499 which he noted was the cost of a Tesla monthly lease payment. Ocasio-Cortez owns a Tesla Model 3 Long Range.

Donors to the #HelpAbuela campaign included big conservative names such as Dave Rubin, Ben Shapiro, and Candace Owens.

Ocasio-Cortez was roasted on Twitter for not taking care of her grandmother and for her privileged politics in general:
