New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has stirred controversy by bashing President Joe Biden for defending Israel amid the crisis currently engulfing the Middle East’s lone democratic nation.

In a tweet posted Wednesday afternoon, she aimed fury at Biden for having issued a statement earlier that afternoon in defense of Israel and its “right to defend itself.”

“Blanket statements like these w/ little context or acknowledgement of what precipitated this cycle of violence – namely, the expulsions of Palestinians and attacks on Al Aqsa – dehumanize Palestinians & imply the US will look the other way at human rights violations. It’s wrong,” she wrote.

“By only stepping in to name Hamas’ actions – which are condemnable – & refusing to acknowledge the rights of Palestinians, Biden reinforces the false idea that Palestinians instigated this cycle of violence. This is not neutral language. It takes a side – the side of occupation,” she added.

The tweet provoked both praise and backlash.

On one hand, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Glenn Greenwald, a fierce critic of Israel, praised the Democrat lawmaker for finally standing up to Biden for a change:

A few other high-profile left-wing figures, all of them members of the mainstream press, followed Greenwald’s lead.

That being said, the praise was fairly muted compared to the avalanche of outrage that erupted from pro-Israel conservatives who understand that Israel is America’s number one ally and only real democracy in the Middle East.

Pro-Israel conservatives also seemed to boast a better understanding of the current crisis, which was reportedly triggered by a group of Palestinian residents refusing to pay rent to the Jewish owners of their homes.

Jewish people originally owned the homes, but after Israel lost control of the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood during the War of Independence in 1948, Arab families settled in the neighborhood and took over. But once Israel reacquired control of the territory, ownership of the homes was rightly restored to the original Jewish owners.

Instead of evicting the families there, the Jewish owners offered them a choice — either accept a $15 million settlement for their homes or pay rent. Because of pressure from the Palestinian Authority, the terrorist-aligned nationalist group that rules over the Palestinian people, the residents were barred from doing either.

“We now have to choose between a death sentence for Arab landowners who sell land to Jews or living on the street,” one resident told the Jewish Press, describing how the PA has been threatening their lives if they cooperate with the Jewish owners.

This left the owners with no other option but to pursue eviction through the courts. Israel’s Supreme Court had been slated to issue a final ruling on the matter this week, and that’s a large part of what caused a crisis to unfold in Israel.

Below is an explanation:

The crisis specifically erupted because angry Palestinians allegedly started launching rockets into Israel and attacking Israelis. This prompted Israel to fire back in self-defense, and thus the crisis escalated to the point that it’s now a full-blown conflict.

Based on Ocasio-Cortez’s tweets, it seems she lacks a fundamental understanding of the dynamics playing out in Israel. In fairness to the New York lawmaker, prior to getting elected in 2018, she herself admitted in an interview, “I am not the expert on geopolitics on this issue,” i.e., the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.

No kidding?

For a comprehensive history lesson, she may want to consider reading the tweets below and taking some notes.
