‘I’m in trouble’: Biden distracted by hecklers and lost mask at rally that mimics comedy routine

President Joe Biden, flanked by ever-present nurse maid/first lady Jill Biden, held a drive in rally — yes, Democrats are back to those — in Duluth, Ga., to mark his 100th day in office and the election of both Democratic candidates in the January 5 runoff elections that flipped control of the U.S. Senate.

The rally launches a nationwide blitz by Biden to promote his American Jobs Plan and American Families Plan, a $4 trillion spending spree to “rebuild” infrastructure and vastly expand the government’s social safety net — the plan will also prompt a tax increase from Democrats.

The even did not go off without a hitch or two, as the president was distracted by a cough, pausing repeatedly to cough into his hand, and by hecklers. Rounding it out, Biden engaged in what came across as a comedy skit at the conclusion of his brief remarks, when he couldn’t find the mask he had just slipped into his jacket pocket a few short minutes earlier.

The painful to watch incident played into the image of a doddering old fool many have of the 78-year-old Biden as he desperately searched for his mask.

“I can’t find my mask,” he told his wife, before leaning to the mic and saying “I’m looking for my mask, I’m in trouble.”

At one point, hecklers laid in heavy on Biden, seemingly protesting the detention of tens of thousands of illegal immigrants being held along the overrun southern border.

The persistent hecklers chanted, “End private detention centers now!”; “Abolish ICE! Abolish ICE!”; and “Communities not prisons!”

Their efforts provoked a remarkable reply from Biden

“I agree with you, I’m working on it, man. Give me another five days,” the president said, drawing cheers from the crowd.

Addressing those gathered, Biden either didn’t fully grasp their intent or cleverly tried to steer away from the topic of the self-imposed humanitarian crisis on the border, explaining that the protesters were referencing private prisons.

“Folks, you all know what they’re talking about. There should be no private prisons, period. None, period,” he said. ” That’s what they’re talking about, private detention centers. They should not exist, and we’re working to close all of them.”

Biden signed an executive order in January directing the Justice Department to end contracts with private prisons, but exempted Homeland Security, which uses private detention centers for illegal immigrants.

As for the timeframe he spoke of, the New York Post reported that the president later clarified to reporters that he was “teasing” the protesters.

In closing out his speech, Biden spoke of a reality that seems to exist only in the pages of the written words before him.

“Folks, it’s only been 100 days, but I have to tell you, I’ve never been more optimistic about the future in America, and America is on the move again,” he declared. “We’re choosing hope over fear, truth over lies, light over darkness. We’re working, we’re working again. We’re dreaming again. We’re discovering again. And we’re leading the world again. And you’re proving democracy can deliver for the people. We just need to remember who we are.”

But the lost mask seemed to resonate more with social media users, who collectively noted how Biden often talks about getting “in trouble.”
